What’s caught Andy’s eye at RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction

-

This makes my 16th year of covering RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction. I have had some great times and seen some great cars at the sale. Part of the charm of this auction is the diversity of the cars that RM Sotheby’s offers.

This year is no different, which makes it difficult to narrow my “Pick6” selection. Actually, I couldn’t reduce my list of likes that far, so I’m including seven cars on the docket that I would love to have in my personal collection.

1967 Porsche 911S
I have owned a '67 S and while this first version of the iconic 911S is a bit more temperamental than the later versions, it is the first and probably the best investment of all the early long hood 911S cars. This example is a very clean and nice one, having been properly restored. It is not my favorite color but is such a well restored example that I can overlook the somewhat plain color.

1978 BMW M1
It astounds me that the M1 is yet to be a million dollar car. These cars should cost that much and are still not at that price level. The M1 makes for a reliable and practical super car and I have loved the look of them since they were new. If only I could fit in one, all would be perfect.

1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC 6.0 AMG 'Wide Body’
This car is the ultimate Miami Vice prop car. These cars are exceeding rare; I have not seen once since they were new. This car also is so clean that it looks better than new. These cars offer tremendous performance and are the most outrageous Mercedes of the era. A car this rare and in this great a shape is a very safe investment.

1952 Volkswagen Beetle
I love the Beetle, the older the better. This early split-window is an excellent number-matching restoration. The Beetle has continued to climb in value over the past year. Early Beetles like this are rarely found in this nice and I would love to have it parked in my garage.

1970 Mazda Cosmo Sport Series 2
The Cosmo is probably my favorite classic Japanese car. These cars are very nice driving GT cars and the details of this one — interior trim and exterior styling — make these a very cool jet age-looking design. Add to that a 2-rotor engine that revs forever and you have a great car. These cars are still undervalued for how rare they are and as a historical artifact are quite important.

1959 Austin-Healey Sprite Mk.1 ‘Think Pink’ race car
This might well be the bargain buy of the entire weekend. This Sprite is an incredibly important car to American road racing history, having been raced by the legendary Donna Mae Mims, the first female SCCA champion. This car is eligible at any vintage racing event in the country. I hope it goes to a great home and is continued to be raced by another female driver.

1968 Alfa Romeo Gran Sport Quattroroute by Zagato
This is only the second time I have seen an Alfa Quattroroute. These cars are exceedingly rare with only a 93 built in the three years. The Quattroroute is a special Alfa 105 GT based chassis that was sent to Zagato where it was bodied in a style reminiscent of their 6C 1750, just on a smaller scale. With 105 Alfa based mechanics these are easy to service and maintain and are rare cars  that are still underpriced.
