A new cross-country rally aimed specifically at vintage air-cooled Porsches will make a spirited run through the Wild West back roads of Montana, Idaho and Washington in May.
The Ramshorn Rally welcomes 1989 and earlier Porsche 911 and 356 sports cars to a five-day event created by the same vintage-car enthusiasts who organize the popular Going to the Sun Rally held in Montana for sports and GT cars.
All manner of air-cooled Porsches are invited, from the most-correct restored cars to the most-tweaked “outlaws,” as Porsche folk like to call their performance customs. With the rising popularity of durable 356 cars through 1965 to the iconic 911 models that followed, Ramshorn directors anticipate a strong showing of drivers eager to take their classic Porsches on 1,300 miles of interesting two-lane highways through scenic Western vistas.
The rally is headed by Will Brewster and Patrick Bryson, who share more than 25 years of vintage-car rally experience.
“The Ramshorn Rally will be a mix of local culture and very upscale features,” Bryson said, with all accommodations, food and drink, entertainment, luggage handling, mechanical help and trailers (hopefully not needed) provided by the rally staff.
The flyer for the rally shows the irreverent tone of the event, in line with the offbeat views of many Porsche enthusiasts.
“Consider this rally to be the twisted stepsister of the Going to the Sun Rally,” the flyer says. “It will be a drivers’ event with high-mileage days and an assortment of motley stops along the way.”
The recently minted logo for the rally includes the German word for air-cooled: luftgekuhlt.
