Vettes for Vets and a Demo day Memorial Day weekend

Looking for something to fill your Memorial Day weekend?  Here are some special car events being held at automotive museums around the country this weekend and in the near future.

Saturday, May 23, the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is celebrating the cars of legendary drivers Rudolf Caracciola, Tazio Nuvolari and Stirling Moss at a Demo Day featuring a 1927 Mercedes Benz S-Type Sportwagen, 1934 MG K3 Magnette and a 1956 Maserati 300S. The California Automobile Museum in Sacramento California,  is hosting the 6^th annual Vettes for Vets and American Muscle Car show on Memorial Day, May 26. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a raffle, hot dogs, free admission for retired and active military and car owners, and everyone is encouraged to dress in theme: Rosie the Riveter, Uncle Sam or various military fatigues.

On Saturday, May 30, the museum will be having its first Sketch and Sip class. Students will learn the basics of sketching automobiles, and several local wines will be served. On Sunday, June 21, the CAM will give free admission to fathers for Father’s Day in addition to rides in some of the museum’s classic cars. Mark your calendar for Aug 15 and 16 as the museum is heading to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. To learn more, visit the museum’s website.

May 30 and 31 is the Owls Head Transportation Museum’s annual Owls Head Spring Antique Auto Show at the museum in Owls Head, Maine. All pre-1995 vehicles are eligible to enter the show. In the skies above the museum grounds, there will be an air show, weather permitting. The museum also will have free Model T rides, interactive readings and a scavenger hunt. Darryl Starbird’s National Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum, located in Afton, Oklahoma, is holding its 20^th anniversary celebration and induction ceremony June 5 and 6. In addition to the ceremony, the museum is holding an outdoor show-and-shine car show on the grounds by the lake. The cost is $40 to show a car and can be purchased online.  To attend the induction ceremony, a $50 donation must be made online prior to May 25. The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum will host Summer Day Camp from June 15-19. The camp is for kids 10-12 years old and goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

“We have developed programs and activities through the help of the Education Committee and the expertise of our staff,” said Kendra Klink, chief operating officer of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum. “This week of camp promises to be exciting for the campers, volunteers, and staff.

“Campers will have the opportunity to learn about the Auburn Automobile Company, the automotive history of the area, art deco, early automotive racing, how a car works, and so much more. The price for camp is $150 per student.  Campers will take home something every day to share with his or her family and friends about what they have learned that day.”

From now until September 6, the National Corvette Museum’s exhibit hall is home to 14 cars that tell the story of NASCAR. The NASCAR exhibit features vehicles from the 1940s moonshine-running days to today’s sprint-car champs.

Additionally, the NCM, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is hosting a special groundbreaking ceremony at the Motorsports Park for the Holley Control Tower and Events center on May 28. More information about that project will be given day of.

On June 13-14, the NCM will be one of only three places outside of France with commercial-free direct feed of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The race will be played in the museum’s Chevrolet Theatre on their 28-foot screen. The museum will be providing breakfast that Saturday and Sunday, and a light dinner service will be provided Saturday night along with a cash bar. Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the event.
