A few days ago, I got a message from a friend about a car he was looking for. It was a car that I had not thought about for quite awhile, the 1968 Ford Mustang California Special. Somehow these often overlooked pony cars are still affordable, having not experienced the run up in price that has happened to every other classic Mustang.

They come to Barrett-Jackson from all walks of celebrity. There are the entertainers; this year it was Justin Bieber, selling his Ferrari 458 Italia F1, and Steven Tyler his Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, with proceeds from later going to charity. And sports stars, too: Floyd Mayweather offering up his Bugatti Veyron and Dale Earnhardt Jr. selling his NASCAR Chevrolet, like Tyler also for charity. Why, even ol’ Burt Reynolds got into the act, with yet another of his 1978 Pontiac Firebird Bandits.
Also up on the block last week at Scottsdale was the perhaps lesser-known Mark Fields. While he may not be a star of the stage or screen or sports arena, Fields is president and chief executive of the Ford Motor Company and he helped sell a uniquely outfitted 2017 F-150 Raptor pickup that raised $207,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Drive Home II, the second-annual promotional winter road trip cooked up by LeMay-America’s Car Museum and The North American International Auto Show, rolled into Detroit’s Cobo Hall Saturday evening after a 2,100-mile journey fraught with challenges.
Three classic cars – a 1957 Chevy Nomad, a 1961 Chrysler 300G and a 1966 Ford Mustang – began the trip from Boston on December 28. Trailered behind the support vehicle was a fourth car, a 1917 Crane-Simplex Model 5, formerly the property of J.D. Rockefeller. Continue reading
Back in the early 1970s, a man ran a stop sign and slammed into the left-rear quarter panel of my beloved 1969 Ford Mustang fastback as we were driving to dinner on a four-lane country road.
The man told the investigating police officer that his grandson was standing on the front seat and he realized that if he slammed on the brakes after seeing the stop sign, his grandson would have been flung into the windshield — which he was anyway during the resulting impact, fortunately suffering only a minor cut and some bruises. The remarkable legacy of Carroll Shelby has many twists and turns, many deviations from his history as a successful racecar driver and Le Mans team leader to the visionary who combined a British roadster with a Ford V8 to create one of the greatest sports cars of all time, the Shelby Cobra.
One of Shelby’s sidelines after heart issues ended his racing career in 1961 was operation of the Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Driving, considered to be America’s first competition-driving school. Shelby ran the innovative school at Riverside International Raceway in California, where his students included racing stars, movie stars, fashion models and an assortment of the rich and famous. Since it is election week, I decided to make the Pick of the Week something that was uniquely American in concept.
In 1966, Shelby and Hertz put together an amazing partnership. They made available for rent 1,000 special Shelby GT350 cars, calling them the GT350H. These are an amazing part of the Shelby legend, and there are many stories of renters picking up these cars and racing them in professional events and then returning them to Hertz. Hopefully, they opted for the full insurance package on their rental agreements. Continue reading
