The trio of rare Bizzarrini 5300 SI Spyders, the only open-top cars from the acclaimed run of Italian exotics, will be on the show field March 13 as the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance celebrates the 50th anniversary of the short-lived but memorable performance brand.
Created by the gifted engineer, designer and test driver Giotto Bizzarrini, the low and lush GT cars were produced after he was purged from Scuderia Ferrari by Enzo Ferrari after a star-crossed championship racing season. Just over 100 of Bizzarini’s cars were hand built, and only three were Spyders.
The only three Bizzarrini Spyders built will appear together | Amelia Island ConcoursThe spectacular Bizzarrinis are highly valued today by collectors, who are attracted by their unique styling and solid American drivetrains.
“When the man who created the Ferrari GTO and the original Lamborghini V12 engine builds a car and puts his name on it, hard-core ‘car guys’ pay close attention,” said Mark Becker, vice chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “Even with Chevy V8 power that most of us associate with muscle cars, Bizzarrinis have a strong Italian accent.
“The Bizzarrini 5300 Spyder is so rare that very few hard-core Italian car aficionados have even seen one, let alone all three of them together.”
The 21st annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance takes place March 11-13, with the prestigious show on the 10th and 18th fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island at The Ritz-Carlton in Florida.
