You don’t find resto-mods or concours-level restorations at Bonhams annual Preserving the Automobile Auction. Instead, the event features barn finds and original vehicles with the intent that they be conserved and preserved as historic artifacts.

The fourth annual Bonhams sale, held Monday at the museum which has championed preservation over restoration, posted an 86 percent sell-through rate and $3.3 million in sales. The auction included not only its typical fare of unrestored automobiles but also pre-Civil War locomotives. The locomotives had been part of the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry collection and sold to what Bonhams termed “institutional” buyers. Continue reading

Several historic railway locomotives that have spent the past 80 years at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago also will be part of the auction.
On October 5, and for the fourth year in a row, Bonhams will conduct a “Preserving the Automobile” auction at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia. Museum founder Fred Simeone, a renowned surgeon, has been a champion of preserving rather than restoring historically important vehicles, and Bonhams notes in its news release that the sale “is wholly distinct in its focus on authentic, historically accurate and unrestored motorcars.” Continue reading
