The star cars shined Friday at the collector car auctions taking place on the Monterey Peninsula.

In the daily report from Hagerty, the insurance and vehicle-valuation tracking company that monitors each of the sales, “Much of this week’s perceived success hinged on RM Sotheby’s selling its 1956 Aston Martin DBR1, Gooding & Company selling its 1970 Porsche 917K, and Bonhams selling its 1995 McLaren F1.

Uwe Ehinger is a German who builds custom motorcycles, often recycling parts he has collected on his pilgrimages around the world to “remote garages, dilapidated scrapyards and dusty backyards for legendary lost two-wheeled relics.”

“Every time I make a find of rare bikes, I wonder how to use every single part — because they deserve to be preserved,” he says on a website that takes its name from Ehinger’s nickname, “The Archeologist.” Continue reading

Ferrari collection headed to RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction

A baker’s dozen of Ferraris, all from a single owner, most offered without reserve, has been consigned to RM Sotheby’s annual Monterey auction, scheduled for August 18-19 at Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center in downtown Monterey, California.

The “Ferrari Performance Collection” comprises 13 cars spanning 50 years of Ferrari history and includes a 1961 250 GT SWB and a 1967 275 GTB/4. Also included are a 1991 F40, a 2011 599 GTO that has been driven only 481 miles and a 1984 512 BBi showing only 533 miles since new. Continue reading

Calling it “the most significant group of Aston Martin competition cars to ever come to auction,” RM Sotheby’s has announced its Monterey sale scheduled for August 18-19 will feature among other racing Astons the 1956 DBR1, chassis No. 1, the prototype for the car that Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori drove to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1959.

Ferrari celebrates its 70th anniversary this year and part of those festivities will be what RM Sotheby’s terms the “most significant single-marque sale in auction history,” a single-marque auction September 8 at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy.

With a pair of pre-war French classics each selling for more than $3 million, RM Sotheby’s fourth Ville Erba sale on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como posted more than $28.5 million in sales Saturday. Forty-one of the 66 cars and motorcycles were sold, for a 62 percent sell-through rate.

“It’s great to see that the demand for special pre-war cars is stronger than ever, and we continue to see rare, low-production supercars with excellent provenance, performing very strongly,” Augustin Sabatie-Garat, RM Sotheby’s car specialist and Villa Erba auction manager, said in a news release. RM Sotheby’s is adding a collector car auction to its calendar but eliminating another. The company announced Tuesday that it will take over presentation of the fifth annual Santa Monica, California, sale previously staged by its subsidiary Auctions America.

However, RM Sotheby’s will not stage the sale it has done for some 20 years in conjunction with the Concours d’Elegance of American in the Detroit suburbs, although it will continue as an event sponsor and will have a showcase of cars at the Inn at St. John’s. Continue reading
