The 10th Sunday Scramble at the Bicester Heritage drew more than 2,000 visitors to see classic cars and vintage motorcycles on display at the former RAF Bomber Command Station in Oxfordshire, England, earlier this month.
Bicester Heritage has transformed the 348-acre air station into a center for all sorts of “historic motoring,” and the Sunday Scramble included vintage aircraft and an appearance by the Tiger 9 Tiger Moth display team.
American vehicles were displayed, and not only passenger cars but customs, hot rods and dragsters. The Bicester Heritage news release noted “the WW2 base echoing to the sound of open-piped V8 motors as they lapped the perimeter road before parking up to be enjoyed up close by the crowds.”
Other vehicles participating included a blue Ferrari F40, BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile,” Jaguar XJ220, and Peugeot 205 Roland Garros. Motorcycles ranged from an RS350 YPVS and RD400 to a Kawasaki 750 Mach IV, V-Twin “Flying Millyard” and twin-engine KH500 five-cylinder special.
Visitors also could see the site’s auto, aero and bike storage facility where floor-to-ceiling glass windows provide a view of the vehicles in the heritage’s care.
Some visitors signed up for 20-minute flights in a 1930 biplane. The event also marked Bicester Heritage’s welcome of the H.R. Owen luxury-car dealership and Admiral Young Driver school to the 30-some businesses that have become based at the former airbase.
Atalanta, a 1930s brand recently revived, showed its new two-seat Sports Tourer roadster. Hagerty staged a valuation arena for those wanting to know what their vehicles might be worth.
“With the new Atalanta in attendance and the Historic Vehicle Restoration Apprenticeship showing its teaching facilities, alongside H.R. Owen’s first visit, the 10th Scramble marked a milestone,” Dan Geohagen, Bicester Heritage’s managing director, said in a news release.
“It was a pleasure,” he added, “to see such a wide variety of automotive weaponry, from Trabant to Ferrari F40, and their owners on the campus.”
The next Sunday Scramble is scheduled for October 2.
