Six major collections of primarily American muscle cars, Corvettes and Mustangs will be featured when Mecum Auctions opens its massive five-day Spring Classic sale to the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
The 28th annual Indy auction takes place May 12-16 with an estimated 2,000 vehicles crossing the block. New this year is the addition of a motorcycle auction on May 14 with around 100 bikes ranging from antique to modern.
Among the multi-car collections coming to Mecum’s flagship auction are:
The Don Davis Collection of 18 stellar cars that reflect 35 years of collecting low-production, historically meaningful cars, most of which have been restored to concours quality, according to Mecum. They include two Shelby Cobra Roadsters, a meticulously restored 1967 Shelby 427 (CSX3356) and a rare automatic-transmission 1965 Shelby 289 (CSX2549).
The 1958 Fuelie Collection from Larry Gerig’s Corvette Classic Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with eight 1958 fuel-injected Chevrolet Corvettes in every color available that model year.
The Rick Baker Ford Collection with some of the most desirable examples of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars, ranging from a pair of Ford Broncos to an elegant white 1965 Lincoln Continental convertible. The collection includes one of the modern-day exotics that has become a pricey mainstay of classic car auctions, a 2006 Ford GT with just 310 miles on its odometer,
The Mike Yager “My Garage” Collection of 11 Corvettes from the Effingham, Illinois, museum owned by Yager, chief executive of MidAmerica Motorworks. The offerings include a “barn find” 1957 Corvette with a trailer for towing it home, a weird 1994 Corvette limousine and an even weirder custom from Death Race 2000 that looks like a cross between a Corvette and a crocodile.
The Danny Hill Collection of big-block, full-size muscle cars from GM, Ford and Mopar, plus Corvettes and Mustangs, with 23 cars in all.
The Mike Guarise Collection of four special muscle cars: 1969 and 1971 Buick GS Stage 1 convertibles, a 1971 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 convertible and a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro coupe that is the last-known L88 Stage III Super Car conversion performed by Nickey Chevrolet.
The Mecum auction draws a wide array of collector cars to Indy, from relatively affordable drivers and hobbyist cars to high-end rarities. The top-dollar cars of the auction will cross the block Thursday and Friday evening (May 14-15) and on Saturday afternoon (May 16).
Headlining this year’s Indy sale is the lowest-mileage 1970 Plymouth 426 Hemi Cuda known to exist, a hardtop with just 81 miles on its odometer. That car is projected to sell in the high six figures, or even cross the million-dollar mark.
