Racing great Vic Elford, one of the fastest drivers of the 1960s and ’70s, and mainly in Porsches, will be guest of honor at the Concours d’Elegance of Texas to be held April 25-26 at the La Torretta Lake Resort & Spa in Montgomery, Texas.
Known as “Quick Vic,” the London-born Elford was an impressively versatile driver, perhaps the most versatile of all time, who excelled in rally and sports car racing, Trans-Am, Formula 1, even NASCAR.
Elford also has a solid Hollywood connection. He was hired by Steve McQueen to drive a Porsche 917 for the high-speed close-up filming in McQueen’s 1971 film Le Mans, which has some of the most-exciting racing sequences ever captured on film.
During his career, Elford set lap records at the Targa Florio, Nurburgring, Daytona, Sebring, Norisring, Monza, Buenos Aires, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Riverside and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He drove to six victories at the Classic Nurburgring and won Targa Florio, Sebring and Daytona. Elford is the only driver to race every version of the legendary Porsche 917.
“Consider Vic’s 1968 season,” reads the biography on Elford’s website, www.vicelford.com. “It began with his win in the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally followed by a win the next weekend in the Daytona 24 Hours. He was second at Sebring a month later, then in May scored an epic victory at the Targa Florio, which is considered the greatest win in Targa history.
“Two weeks later Vic won the Nürburgring 1000 Kilometers. Then in his first F1 race in July Vic took a badly out-classed Cooper T86B to a stunning fourth-place finish in the soaking-wet French Grand Prix.”
Elford will be guest of honor at numerous events during the concours weekend, including Porsche of North Houston’s Texas Tour d’Elegance, Next Gen Education Summit, Worldwide Auctioneers’ The Houston Classic Auction, Cowboys & Cars charity dinner, and Sunday’s main event, the Concours d’Elegance of Texas.
