So Bob Golfen heads off to cover Monterey Classic Car Week, which leaves me to select the Pick of the Week. While it seems to me that just about any car Bob sees on that California peninsula would make an excellent Pick of the Week, I’ve nonetheless gone through the latest additions to the ClassicCars.com marketplace and have made my selection — a 1956 Chevrolet 210 Handyman station wagon.
O.K., so it’s not a highly sought after Nomad, but wait, there’s more!
Not only is the seller offering this stock-appearing but powertrain-updated classic wagon with its two-tone Nassau and Harbor Blue color scheme, but the wagon is linked — via a trailer hitch — to a restored 1950 teardrop trailer trimmed in the same colors.
So, while you’re spending your day at a car show, you can cook up a meal or even take a nap. Or you can take a road trip and not have to worry about finding a place to sleep or eat along the way.
According to the seller, the wagon is clean with no rust in the paint, frame or floor pans, and throughout its life has been stored inside when not being driven.
The original powertrain has been replaced with an “early ‘90s” Corvette 350-cubic-inch V8 with tuned-port injection, a Turbo 350 three-speed automatic transmission and a nine-inch Ford rear end with a 3.50:1 ratio and limited slip. Dual exhaust and aluminum wheels wrapped with BFG Radial T/A tires are part of the mechanical update.
The interior appears to have been restored, but in the original, two-tone factory colors of Light Turquoise and Gray.
“This wagon drives down the road nicely, in spite of no power steering,” says the seller.
The restored teardrop has a stainless steel kitchen with sink and ice box and has a finished, insulated interior with vinyl upholstery and carpeting. There’s even a table that attaches to the side of the trailer for dining.
