Weighing in at 13,200 pounds and stretching 31 feet, 6 inches long, capable of holding two people at its maximum, we have an absolutely ridiculous yet insanely awesome Pick of the Day: the 2015 Packard Royal Streamliner.
This car first caught my attention in June at the Great Race lunch stop in Winslow, Arizona, then again in August at Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada, and now here it resides on ClassicCars.com, listed for sale in Winslow for $1,750,000. So what does a one and three-quarter million dollars get you in addition to 13,000 pounds and 31 feet of car?
A boat motor.
That’s’s right, a boat motor. But not just any boat motor. According to the listing, the Packard Royal features a V12 out of a 1940’s World War II-era Patrol Torpedo boat, which was used for high speed torpedo attack of larger surface ships. The supercharged motor pushes out 1,600 horsepower and 3,000 pound-feet of torque.
Because this monster engine came from a boat, the listing says, it turns opposite of what it would on land, and thus has two transmissions and two drivelines to get the correct rotation for street use. The V12 requires four radiators and six cooling fans with the capability of holding 25 gallons of coolant to keep it running properly. The listing also says the motor takes 30 gallons of oil, and holds 100 gallons of fuel. No mention of fuel mileage, which is probably a good thing.
The Packard Royal also features air-ride suspension, power steering, and air brakes so the vehicle can stop efficiently, the listing says, and drive comfortably.
It looks like an enormously oversized vintage speed-record car that you might take to the Bonneville Salt Flats, gleaming in unpainted metallic shine and sporting a set of ’59 Cadillac taillights.
The builder, Rodney Rucker, had some help with the design from the well-known customizer Chip Foose.
So if you require a really big attention getter, it’s full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes in this over-the-top creation.
