Since I began writing predominantly about classic cars, I’ve lost some of my interest in newer models. Each year, the advancements in technology are cool, but I’ve become more interested in the stories behind each vintage car that add to its provenance.
Classic car auctions nowadays largely accept and present modern supercars, but it’s not common to come across late-model performance cars that have been used for racing or that have any substantial history behind them – mainly because they are so new.
The Pick of the Day, a 2015 Lamborghini Huracan LP 620-2 2 Super Trofeo factory race car wrapped in Prestige Performance livery, breaks the mold by amassing significant provenance at its young age.
The future classic listed on ClassicCars.com was used to compete in the 2016 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America Championship by a well-supported race team, and it is credited with six Pro Category race wins and six second-place finishes with driver Shinya Michimi. The car has earned four Pro-Am race wins and nine Top Five finishes by Trent Hindman and Craig Duerson, including an overall win at Road America.
According to the race team’s website, the Lamborghini will be used to compete in the Pro category driven by Alex Popow and Michele Beretta as part of a four-car program for the 2017 season, and the Huracan is set to make its first appearance at the challenging 3.4-mile, 20-turn Circuit of the Americas road course in Austin, Texas, at the Super Trofeo season opener, May 4 to 6.
Other events the car is slated to race in – including one in Italy – can be found online along with the technical specifications of the race-ready machine.
The Huracan replaces the Gallardo in the Lamborghini lineup and comes powered by a V10 engine rated with 620 horsepower that moves the supercar via all-wheel-drive. The Super Trofeo race car differs from its all-wheel-drive civilian counterpart being exclusively rear-wheel drive for track purposes. The Huracan is now complimented by the Huracán Performante, which recently made headlines setting a new production car lap record of 6:52.01 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.
The Lambo is offered for $325,000 by a New Jersey-based dealer, although the details are unclear about the active No. 10 race car’s ownership details and stipulations. The dealer notes that the odometer shows just 2,554 miles.
