I’ve taken a stronger notice of Alfa Romeo and have been following the Italian automaker ever since I had the opportunity to drive a 2016 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider during Monterey Car Week in August. The Alfas that have caught my eye tend to be classic or very modern without much in between, but as I sorted through ClassicCars.com, I stumbled upon the Pick of the Day, a 1991 Alfa Romeo 164S.
The listing says this Alfa Romeo is finished in Onyx Black paint coupled with a black leather interior which highlights the gold-finished Q4 Speedline alloy wheels. The seller, a dealer in Boise, Idaho, notes that the electronic sport suspension is fully functional and the car comes with a 5-speed manual transmission.
“If you’re looking for a unique, involving driving experience, look no further than this 164S” the listing said.
As an avid driving enthusiast and a bit of a purist, what I loved about the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is that it’s a no-nonsense, no-frills, two-seat sports car made to be driven by an enthusiast. The ClassicCars.com listing for the 164 doesn’t include much about the car’s background, but the details were enough to spark my curiosity and led me on a Google search landing on a buyer’s guide.
The buyer’s guide shares that the basic concept of the 164 was developed in conjunction with Fiat, Lancia and Saab before Fiat purchased Alfa. The coachwork was designed by Pininfarina and the 164S – S for “sports” – came equipped with semi-active electronically controlled damping known to have a nice blend of smooth ride and sharp handling. The S models also came fully loaded with luxury features, such as automatic climate control.
In S form, the Alfa’s V6 produced 200 horsepower, moving the car from 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds and achieving a top speed near 150 miles per hour.
The Alfa Romeo 164S listed on ClassicCars.com is said to show 109,500 miles on the odometer, while the seller adds that the sale of this car includes records with more than $5,000 in receipts and a clean Carfax report.
The listing includes that 10,000 miles have been driven since the timing belt was replaced, and the clutch is strong.
“This is a car I would not hesitate to drive across the country,” the seller says adding more images of the car are available upon request. The car, offered for $16,995, will be stored in a secured climate-controlled facility until point of sale, the seller says.
