Ask the experts about still-affordable cars that are moving at a pretty good clip toward becoming more expensive collectible cars, and a consistent response is Fox-bodied Mustangs.
Pick of the Day is just such a car, a 1984 Ford Mustang GT convertible, and it is still quite affordable, advertised on ClassicCars.com for $9,500 or best offer.
Ford built its pony car on the Fox chassis from 1978 to 1993. Though not nearly as sought after — or as expensive to buy — as first- or second-generation Mustangs, the Fox-bodied cars are popular with Gen-Xers and Millennials, and they figure to only become more expensive as time advances.
The car featured today is a red Mustang GT with a black convertible top and a two-tone grey interior. The hood has a wide black accent section down its middle while the interior has contrasting red piping on the cloth seats.
The car also comes with a nice story.
“I bought this in 1985 for my wife’s birthday,” the seller writes. “Kept it until 2009 and then sold it to a friend who had it repainted the original color and redid the interior also in the original color.
“We bought it back from him in 2016 as a gift to my wife again, but she likes her Mini better and complains because it has to sit outside. So it’s for sale again and I’m not buying it back.”
The car, which is located in The Villages, near Orlando, Florida, has been driven only 91,000 miles since new, the seller says, adding that until recently, the car had been garaged since new.
“I replaced the top in 2008 before I sold it,” he writes, adding that since buying the car back, he has replaced the radiator and valve-cover gaskets, which had dried out from the car not being driven.
“When we bought it back we drove it from Ohio back home to Florida,” the seller notes. “This Mustang GT convertible is in great shape. This could make a great show car or something to drive on a daily basis.”
The car has its original engine, a high-output 5.0-liter V8 rated at 205 horsepower. The engine is linked to an automatic gearbox. It also has power brakes and steering, locks and windows, and a tilting steering column and an AM/FM/CD audio.
