Pick of the Day is a 1975 BMW 2002 being advertised on ClassicCars.com by a private owner who purchased the car in California in 2012.
“It was a blue-plate California car and what interested me most about it was the absolute lack of rust and solid floorboards/trunk/frame along with solid everything else,” the seller, located in Algonquin, Illinois, says in the classified advertisement for the car.
The original Verona Red paint “had seen its share of the California sun and looked tired and worn,” the seller notes.
“It ran great for the most part, but the owner seemed like a weekend garage warrior who worked on the car himself so there were plenty of things that could be ‘improved’ or re-done because they were slapped together (mismatched bolts, missing bolts, wrong types of bolts, things installed backwards, etc…). It also had some body issues in the passenger door (dent) along with many little dings and scrapes.”
The seller said the car was shipped back to the Chicago area to BMW specialist A&L Autobody, which in addition to making repairs also installed an OEM BMW Turbo front air dam, flared fenders and shortened bumpers, and removed the belt-line trim and welded the holes.
A decision was made to do a mild resto-mod on the car so the Verona Red was replaced with a more-vibrant Imola Red.
“While the body work was being done at A&L, I had the engine/trans (a manual) taken to a man that I trust with all my BMWs at Dynamic BMW,” the seller continues.
Other changes included Eisenmann exhaust — believed to be the first such application for a 2002 — and BBS wheels.
The car then went to Ben Thongsai for tuning of engine and suspension.
“I enjoyed the car on nice weekends and sunny days as much as I could,” the seller notes.
“So why am I getting rid of this car? Simple… I got bored with being so careful with it. This car needs someone who will drive it and enjoy it like the last guy before me.”
The advertisement then details a long chronological of all the work that’s been done on the car, concluding with a “full disclosure” note that the headliner needs to be replaced, the stereo needs to be rewired and “second gear has a very slight grind when shifting cold.”
The odometer shows 97,000 miles.
The asking price is $27,000.
