Now that summer has officially started, what better way to hit the beach than in an imaginatively customized VW bus transformed into an open-air dune buggy.
The Pick of the Day is a 1969 Volkswagen custom transporter in sunny yellow for sale in Southern California, of course. The unique beach cruiser will definitely turn heads, and everybody would be begging for rides.
The apparently handmade funmobile listed by its Phelan, California, owner on ClassicCars.com has been updated with a 1,917cc flat-four engine that the seller says shows good compression in all cylinders, and it “easily cruises at 70 mph.” The former bus is rust free, the seller says, and the floor boards and rear deck are covered in indoor-outdoor carpeting.
The VW is topped by a hand-crafted wooden roof with a large rack “for carrying your boards, baggage, and camping supplies,” the seller says, directing his sales pitch at the surfer crowd who would best appreciate this unique ride. The roof is removable, and the VW comes with a burgundy Sunbrella canvas top that matches the Sunbrella upholstery.
VW enthusiasts will be either appalled or delighted by this charming buggy, which makes me long for the seashore and a sandy ride to the beach loaded up with gear. Creative tinkerers have been modifying Volkswagens all along, as you can see at any VW car show.
The asking price for this beach buggy is $12,500 for a vehicle that serves no practical purpose aside from having fun in the sun.
