1968 Pontiac Firebird

I’ve spent far longer then I care to admit staring at the Pick of the Day car, a 1968 Pontiac Firebird, trying to think of something smart and interesting to say about it, but I keep coming back to the same basic things.

I mean, let’s be honest, I love to go fast and I love anything that looks fast and will allow me to go fast.

The Firebird is eye-catching, I-look-like-I-am-speeding-even-when-I-am-parked “arrest me red”

The color of this Firebird got my attention right away. The listing on ClassicCars.com doesn’t specify exactly what type of red it is – though it has been freshly color-sanded – but the photos show it’s clearly coated in that eye-catching, I-look-like-I-am-speeding-even-when-I-am-parked “arrest me red” that gets your adrenaline pumping.

And because it’s not always just about looks, what kept me interested was the Chevrolet ZZ4 350 high-output crate engine rated at 355 horsepower and 405 pounds-feet of torque.

According to the listing, the Chevy small-block has a forged steel crankshaft, hypereutectic pistons, hydraulic roller camshaft and lifters, and Corvette-derived high-performance aluminum heads, which  the listing says, help provide “strong power and torque at all rpm levels.”

Other engine mods include an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold, HEI distributor, and Holley 750-cfm carburetor.

Mated to the ZZ4 is an automatic 700 R4 overdrive transmission with Hurst Pro Shifter while the Firebird rides on a set of QA1 Performance front and rear shocks in addition to “new” front and rear sway bars.

The listings vehicle details note the black vinyl interior is in excellent condition while the seller adds there is a custom center console that houses the entertainment system consisting of Sirius XM, navigation system and back-up camera. A Dynamat sound dampening system has been put in place along with a complete sound system featuring “Panasonic Tuner, built-in front side and rear speakers, plus Audio RL sub-woofer.”

Listed for $45,000 and offered by a private seller in Sherman Oaks, California, the Firebird also features a security system with GPS location tracking.

  1. I have been looking for this car for a long time. I had one in high school in the 70’s. Can someone call me to discuss. Thank you.
