Since it is election week, I decided to make the Pick of the Week something that was uniquely American in concept.
In 1966, Shelby and Hertz put together an amazing partnership. They made available for rent 1,000 special Shelby GT350 cars, calling them the GT350H. These are an amazing part of the Shelby legend, and there are many stories of renters picking up these cars and racing them in professional events and then returning them to Hertz. Hopefully, they opted for the full insurance package on their rental agreements.
This 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H fastback is offered by a private seller in Middlebury, Connecticut, and represents something of a bargain for these desirable versions of Shelby magic. The ad on ClassicCars.com does not have a lot of information, but it does include the important bits.
The GT350H is equipped with an automatic transmission, according to the private seller, which many H cars were. The paint color was originally black with gold stripes, as were most of the Hertz cars, but when it was restored in 1983, that was changed to white with gold stripes, the seller says.
The car has covered 74,500 miles, the seller states, and is VIN SFM6S1260 which checks out as a true Shelby. The car comes with an original Shelby manual, delivery receipt and a lot of documentation for the servicing and restoration work.
The GT350H is one of the best values of all the Shelbys, and these cars likely will always be desirable collectibles. They offer entry into many events and give you the opportunity to tell your friends that you own a real Shelby.
The owner does not state whether this car has a matching-number engine or transmission. With any car as rare and valuable as a Shelby Mustang, it is important to check these numbers against the Shelby American Automobile Club Registry book to make sure the drivetrain is original. These books from the SAAC are a great resource for buyers as they contain a tremendous amount of data to help you know what you are getting for your money.
The best part about this GT350H is the price. The seller is asking for just $119,000 or best offer, making it one of the best deals I have seen on one of these cars.
