Shortly before the advent of the Mustang as a midyear 1964 model, the hot ticket among compact Fords was the Falcon Sprint. The monster success of the Mustang overshadowed the freshly redesigned Falcons -– from which the pony cars were derived -– but today, the 1964 Falcon has a dedicated fan base all its own.
The Pick of the Day is a top-of-the-line 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint convertible, of which just over 4,200 were built that model year. The Sprint served as a halo model for Falcon, its 260 cid V8 putting a performance spin on the economy brand, but this one has been updated with the later 289 V8 and Mustang C4 automatic transmission.
No harm done as the Sprint convertible retains its Ford small-block roots as a resto mod with improved drivability. This red-on-red showpiece should attract plenty of eyeball during summer drives with the top down.
Falcon was completely restyled for ’64, gaining a squared-off look with a convex grille, set off with rocket-shaped side trim that gave it a racy look, especially in the two-door hardtop models with their abbreviated rooflines.
This Falcon is a solid Southwestern car in great condition, according to the Lenexa, Kansas, dealer advertising it on ClassicCars.com; the car still wears its solid-copper Arizona historic license plate. During the past three months, the Sprint has had installed a new-old-stock grille and new seat upholstery, carpet, white top, trunk mat and four-barrel Edelbrock carburetor, the seller says, and a modern Pertronix ignition provides reliable spark timing.
The side glass and windshield are clear, and the chrome and paint gleam without dents or scratches, according to the ad. A set of period-correct 14-inch Ford wheels add to its appeal.
The asking price for this Falcon is $29,900, which should provide some nice driving experience for the rest of the summer. Plus, it has all the performance and drivability of an early Mustang V8 but with greater rarity and more potential as a conversation starter.

I bought one of these used just before the 65’s came out. Mine was Red with a black top and botany interior, 4 speed and had the chrome valve covers 289, she was a beauty. Loved that car.
