Whether you’re looking to do an event such as Arizona’s Copperstate 1000 rally or the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, the Pick of the Day, a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220SE “Fintail” sedan, might be just the vehicle you need.
Being offered by a private seller located in Palm Beach, Florida his “Rallye Montecarlo” Mercedes is a heckfloose, or Fintail car, that the seller says is very much like the then-new 220 SE W111 that Schock Walter and Moll Rolf drove to victory in the 1960 Monte Carlo Rally. Similar cars finished second, third and fifth to launch a sales rally for the car in Europe.
If you want, you can even equip your Fintail with Walter and Rolf’s winning number — 128.
Rally lights for night drivingThe advertisement for this car on ClassicCars.com noted that the Benz has had only two owners, with the original buyer keeping the car for 60 years as a standard 220SE sedan, as it was delivered new. The car has undergone a full restoration to vintage rallying specification and features Esparco harnesses on the leather seats and yellow-lensed auxiliary lights.
The powertrain is an inline Mercedes six-cylinder engine (rebuilt) linked to a manual transmission.
The interior is Spartan, with no back seat or interior door skins; instead, you can see all the exposed mechanical bits.
The odometer shows only 61,290 miles. The exterior color is Mint and the interior is black.
Dozens of photos in the advertisement show an immaculate vehicle.
“Everything is new on this car,” the seller notes. “It is very fast (for the type) and light weight, this 220SE is absolutely impeccable, it will please the most accurate connoisseur.
“This is a must-have for active collectors.”
The seller notes that the car is eligible for the annual Monte Carlo rally, which accepts only vehicles of the same marques and models that actually raced in one of the original Monte Carlo rallies.
The seller seeks $49,000 or could accept the best reasonable offer.
