For the 1956 model year, Buick built 13,770 four-door station wagons, including some 4,545 upscale versions of what was known as the Estate Wagon. This is one of the survivors, and the North Chicago classic car dealership offering it for sale says it’s a two-owner original with only 54,035 miles on its odometer.

Our Pick of the Day is this 1956 Buick Special Estate Wagon wearing Mint Green and Dover White two-tone paint that the advertisement on ClassicCars.com claims is in “exceptional condition,” although “all exterior brightwork shows a hint of patina,” which is to be expected 60 years after the wagon rolled off the assembly line.753194_22217035_1956_Buick_Special

“The panoramic windshield, windows, and tail lamp lenses are in good condition and work well too,” the advertisement notes.

“The original interior shows well (in) consideration (of) its age but just goes to show that meticulous upkeep and correct storage conditions can truly preserve a vehicle well.

“Amenities include a tissue dispenser, clock, AM radio and a trip odometer,” the ad adds.

The asking price on this wagon is $26,000.

It is powered by a 322cid Fireball V8 rated at 220 horsepower and 319 foot-pounds of torque and linked to the optional Dynaflow transmission; the ad notes that the gearbox shifts crisply “thanks to recent service work.”

“Other recent service items include a new exhaust, battery, and cooling system service,” the seller says. “The heads also features hardened valve seats so unleaded isn’t a problem either.”753194_22217044_1956_Buick_Special

The dealer says the car is “fully sorted… and comfortable in any situation, just load up the family and go!”

To view this listing on ClassicCars.com, where the advertisement includes 50 photos, some of them of the under chassis, see Pick of the Day.

  1. I would say this Buick is a Miracle car from Chi town. I mean geesh, 54,000+ miles and 60 yrs old without being totaled several times already is miraculous. I would say anything over 54 miles and 6 days on the Chicago highways without a serious fender bender is a miracle it’s self. Great, great job of preservation. I say congratulations big time to the owner.

  2. Very nice. The station wagons of the day had little that could be done to dress up the main part of the body, but the 1956 Buick front end and rear taillights were racy for the day. And, of course, the “switch the pitch” Dynaflow and nailhead V* were excellent as a powertrain.

  3. My grandpa had a 1957 Dodge custom that I ssimply adored.
I was in the market for a car and wanted that car so bad.
I would still have that car today if he would have sold it to me.
I remember driving him to church on Sunday’s and to Acme to grocery shop.
Sadly to say he sold for $850.00 to some unknown person,my heart was broken.

  4. As a child I road in many Buicks . My dad’s first new car was a 1957 Buick Super 4dr.He was a Buick enthusiasts owning a Buick Century when he stopped driving in 2006. In 1975 we still had a 55 in the barn which I was getting ready to restore. The barn and house burnt and all was lost.Hope to have another one someday .
