Ford recently celebrated another milestone, the 100th anniversary of its first work truck, the Model TT. Essentially a big-boned version of the Model T automobile, the TT set the stage for generations of purpose-built workhorses that continue through today’s F-Series pickup, for many years the best-selling vehicle in the U.S.

The Pick of the Day is a 1951 Ford F1 pickup, one of the Dearborn automaker’s post-war redesigns as the economy got booming again and tradespeople sought out trucks that were not only job worthy but modern and stylish.

Trucks from this era look great and in recent years have caught the eye of collectors who admire their utilitarian beauty, whether wearing the patina of a working life, restored to original, or transformed into imaginative street rods.

This F1 has been resto-modded to look essentially original (well, aside from the lowered stance and the shaved nose) but with a modern drivetrain for improved drivability.

“Wouldn’t you just love to have a vintage pickup that was made to comfortably cruise everywhere?” the Concord, North Carolina, dealer says in the ad on ClassicCars.com. “This 1951 Ford F-1 combines the best of old-school looks on the outside, with a powerful V8 and overdrive transmission.”

Still, according to the ad, the truck retains its authentic feel.

“This Ford’s blue-collar roots are immediately known when you grab the three-spoke wheel and feel the grooves of all the workers who relied on similar pickups for decades,” the ad says. “Despite this utilitarian feel, there have been a couple of nice upgrades, such as the floor shifter and auxiliary gauge package.

“Under the hood is a big upgrade in Blue Oval power. Ford’s famous 302-cubic-inch V8 looks right at home… Plus, it comes with great performance upgrades, including the Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, aluminum intake and Ford Racing plug wires. So when you fire this one up, the throaty rumble of the dual exhaust lets everyone know there’s some extra muscle within this classic pickup.”

There are no mention in the ad of modern revisions to the brakes or suspension, although that is usually standard practice for this type of build.

The asking price of the updated pickup seems fair at $29,995, which would provide a vehicle that can be driven daily and taken on road trips, all the while looking so cool in a vintage Ford.
