How often are you going to find a classic car with concours credentials and an asking price of only $21,500?
But that’s the case with this 1939 Chrysler Royal Windsor Towne Coupe, which the private seller in St. Clair, Michigan, notes was invited to the Meadowbrook Concours d’Elegance a few years ago as part of a “special interest” grouping of cars with art deco design.
According to the advertisement on ClassicCars.com, the car was one of only 373 such cars built that model year.
The Standard Catalog of American Cars notes that the Chrysler Royal received new styling for 1939 with “narrower running boards and the headlamps recessed into the fenders” and that “Royal sixes had five of the horizontal moldings on either side and 19 bars in the ‘waterfall’ grille design.”
Other design cues included a “concealed” rear luggage compartment, V-shaped windshield and “an attractive front bumper with a dip in its center and a twin bar guard arrangement.”
The seller notes in the advertisement that the car was “purchased at an estate sale in 2007 and I completely restored the interior to original standards with all attention to the details. The exterior is not a new restoration because the paint is good. The front bumper was re-chromed and remaining chrome is in great condition.
“The undercarriage is in very good condition with new shocks all the way around. The 95hp inline 6 cylinder engine is original and does not burn any oil.
“Radio, speedometer, odometer and voltage regulator gauges all work. Fuel gauge does not work. New battery. Good clutch, brakes and tires. Glass is in good condition. The paint color is #8601 Sequoia Cream.”
