Ollie is considered “the little old lady from Pasadena” in Cobble Hill, a community on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The Pick of the Day, a 1926 Essex hot rod, has been her car for 13 years, ever since her son and car-builder Richard died.
Richard designed and did most of the work to restore and modify the car. But part way through the process he learned he had an advanced cancer, so his friends from Foothills Kruizin joined in to help him get the car completed in time for the World of Wheels international car show in Calgary, Alberta, in February 2003.
The car was finished in time and at the show won the best classic car award, the first of many honors it would collect in the ensuing years.
Unfortunately, Richard died a month later, leaving the car to his mother.
Now being offered for sale at ClassicCars.com, for $65,000 or best offer, the car shows Richard’s attention to detail. The interior is done in orange leather with a custom headliner and door panels trimmed in purple to match the car’s exterior. The colors were inspired by tropical fish Richard had seen while scuba diving in Indonesia.
The body dates to 1926 (originally it was a late second series Essex) but the mechanical components are contemporary: 302 cubic-inch Ford V8, four-bar suspension with five-inch dropped axle, power steering and brakes and windows, CD/stereo.
The car has been driven only 13,000 kilometers (a little more than 8,000 miles) since it was redone.
