Bentley turns scraps into holiday ornaments

0

Rather than adding leftover materials to be disposed, designers at Bentley decided to create a dozen holiday decorations to display on their Christmas tree.

The ornament-making enterprise was a covert operation, led by head of design collaboration Brett Boydell, but when discovered, it not only gained approval but Bentley has announced that the ornaments will be offered up for bidding, with all proceeds going to British charities.

The decorations have been dubbed the “sustainabaubles” and the project has produced a video in which design department apprentices play the role of Santa’s elves when the whereabouts of the decorations is thrown into doubt.

“With help from Brett and master craftspeople in the factory, they covertly rescue offcuts and spare parts, transforming them into beautiful pieces of festive art,” Bentley reports. “Bentley’s Board members start to realize that something is up, but know that the extraordinary is always possible in Crewe.”

No time of year better encapsulates Bentley’s magical fusion of craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability than the run up to Christmas and we wanted to capture the excitement — and pressure — that we all feel at this time of year,” Boydell is quoted.

“Our apprentices and craftspeople truly rose to the challenge – and have designed and created a beautiful collection of decorations to celebrate Christmas here in Crewe. We hope they will also become treasured mementos for a small number of our lucky customers. And we promise to try not to lose them again next year.”

Bentley has yet to announce when the bidding will begin.

Pick of the Day: Richard Petty-autographed Pontiac 2+2

3

I’ve been looking through the ClassicCars.com Marketplace for some time hoping to find a Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe to feature as Pick of the Day. I always liked that sloping rear window design, and it didn’t hurt any that I got to watch Dale Earnhardt race one in NASCAR competition.

In the meantime, I think I’ve come up with perhaps the next best thing — the Pontiac version of the car, a 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 Aerodynamic Coupe, which is Pontiac’s version of the same General Motors G-body chassis.

Although the private seller of the car says in its advertisement on ClassicCars.com that only 1,229 of the 2+2 Aero coupes were produced for the 1986 model year, The Standard Catalog of American Cars reports the actual number to have been only 200, as needed for NASCAR homologation, and adds that they were sold only by Pontiac dealers in the Southeastern states where NASCAR was most popular.

It also notes that Richard Petty drove such a car in NASCAR races.

Which brings us to the Pick of the Day, which the seller notes is “a great runner and mechanically sound,” adding that “Richard Petty sat in the car and signed the dash of this car when the collection of Pontiac vehicles were features at Indianapolis Motor Speedway”

One of the photos included in the advertisement shows what remains of that signature, and the seller reports having photos of “King Richard” signing the dash panel that day.

The car has a 305cid V8 linked to an automatic transmission. When new, that 5.0-liter powerplant was rated at 150 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque with a 4-barrel carburetor.

The transmission would be a 4-speed automatic and the seller reports the car has a 3:73 rear gear, as well as power windows/locks/brakes/steering, tilt steering, air conditioning and cruise control.

The seller also reports the carburetor has been rebuilt and the car has new front brake calipers, pads and seals. It also has a dent in the left-rear bumper.

The car is being offered for $17,995. To view this listing on ClassicCars.com, see Pick of the Day.

AutoHunter Spotlight: 2002 Ford Lightning SVT

1

Up for auction on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is a 2002 Ford Lightning SVT.

“This silver 2002 Ford Lightning was used as a pace truck for the 2002 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway,” AutoHunter notes on the Lightning’s listing. “It is highly original with less than 4,000 original miles and the owner states that it features its original tires and air cleaner.”

Under the hood of this low-mileage SVT truck is a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter V8 2V SOHC engine with an oil cooler and the original air cleaner. The SVT engine is paired with a column-shifted 4-speed automatic transmission with an auxiliary transmission. The horsepower flows through a Traction-Lok axle.

The original silver exterior has a black bed cover, factory aero kit, SVT and Lightning emblems, and fog lamps.

The truck has a gray suede interior featuring black leather SVT inlays and a 6-way power driver’s seat.

The sale of the vehicle includes its original window sticker, extra key fob in its original package, and owner’s books. It has a clean CARFAX report and a clear North Carolina title.

This Ford Lightning SVT’s auction ends on December 17, 2021 at 11:40 a.m. MST.

Jay Leno shows off his rare 6-cylinder 1968 Pontiac Firebird Sprint

1

The 1960s are considered the golden age of the American muscle car, but the 1968 Pontiac Firebird Sprint featured on this episode of Jay Leno’s Garage shows that Detroit automakers weren’t only focused on V8s and quarter-mile times.

Instead of the V8 engines offered in other performance versions of the Firebird, the Sprint had an inline-6 under its hood. This was an upgraded version of the engine offered in base versions of the Firebird, sporting a single-overhead-cam head, four-barrel carburetor and performance exhaust. In the Sprint, it’s coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission the driver works with assistance from a hood-mounted tachometer.

As Leno tells it, then-Pontiac boss John DeLorean was a fan of the Jaguar E-Type (which launched in 1961 with a dual overhead cam inline-6) and wanted to build a competitor. While Pontiac did ultimately build a concept version called the Banshee, General Motors wouldn’t approve a production model, fearing it would compete with the Corvette.

Instead, DeLorean launched the Firebird Sprint, intending to take on the E-Type with his own inline-6 (albeit in a larger, heavier car) and an emphasis on handling. Because the Firebird Sprint was meant to compete with European sports cars, it even got “4.1-liter” badging, instead of the cubic-inch displacement measurement that was typical for U.S. automakers at the time.

The Firebird Sprint may have satisfied DeLorean’s legendary ego, but it was not a commercial success. It made less power (about 220 hp) than a V8 Firebird of the time, but cost more, Leno pointed out. Consequently, the Sprint is now very rare. Keep in mind that there was never an equivalent version of the Firebird’s Chevrolet Camaro twin, which shared the GM F-body platform.

Leno acquired his Firebird Sprint convertible in 2019 and put it back on the road after a light restoration and some modern upgrades for drivability. Watch the full video for more details of this unusual Pontiac, and to hear that straight-6 sing.

SoFlo turns Ford’s Bronco into a Stallion

1

So what happens to the new Ford Bronco when it is modified by a company that for more than a decade has specialized in customizing Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators?

What happens is the SoFlo Stallion, a lifted, slantback SUV available with more than 700 horsepower when equipped with a supercharged Coyote 5.0-liter V8 engine swap, according to South Florida Jeeps, the specialist shop in Fort Lauderdale.

“The market for the Ford Bronco is insatiable right now,” South Florida Jeeps owner Joseph Ghattas is quoted in the company’s news release. Ghattas also owns Apocalypse Manufacturing, which does 6-wheel Jeep conversions.

“These vehicles (Broncos) are nearly impossible to find, with hardly any aftermarket companies even attempting to enhance their looks and off-road capabilities, but that’s what separates SoFlo Jeeps from everyone else.

“We take the impossible and make it possible. We have these SoFlo Stallion 4x4s in stock now and they are ready to ship. Our truck has bigger tires and rims and a more capable suspension that allows the driver to conquer all off-road obstacles, while hitting 100 mph with comfort on the highway.

“Probably the most impressive part of our transformation has to be the slantback top. It’s a brand-new item that we are offering and took months of research and development to produce, but after one glance, people just fall in love.”

SoFlo mounts the Stallion on a 3.5-inch lift kit with steering stabilizer and 20-inch Fuel SFJ alloy bronze wheels with 37-inch Patagonia tires. The Broncos also get a custom front bumper, side steps and “decadent King Ranch marine-grade tan-and-dark-brown leather interior.”

“Finally,” the company adds, “the piece that truly transforms the truck into something sure to stop onlookers right in their tracks is the handcrafted fiberglass composite slantback top.”

The top also can be purchased separately, SoFlo notes, for $9,250.

SoFlo says it has built more than 25 Stallions. Prices range from $79,999 to $89,000, SoFlo says. That price includes the donor Bronco. However, SoFlo adds, it does not include an engine swap.

Don’t speed in Switzerland. Or Finland!

1

Leadfeet beware! Don’t get caught speeding in Switzerland, where the average fine for violating the speed limit is $13,320, according to a recent global survey by Budget Direct, an auto insurance company based in Australia.

On other hand, get ticketed for speeding in Sudan and it will cost you only 7 cents.

By the way, the most expensive penalty accessed for violating the posted speed limit was the $767,000 charge faced by the driver of a Mercedes-AMG SLS in 2010 for being caught at 179 mph in Switzerland in 2010.

The culprit claimed “the speedometer must have been on the blink,” Budget Direct reports, adding that the police noted that it took the car more than a quarter-mile to come to a halt.

Switzerland also has fined speeders $439,634 and $430,223.

Belgium once penalized someone $304,598 for violating its speed limit, and for getting caught doing only 45 mph, albeit that was in a 15 mph zone.

You don’t want to get caught speeding in Finland, either, where there have been a dozen penalties ranging from $85,706 to $291,745.

According to Budget Direct, the highest penalty for speeding in the US — well, other than death — has been a $2,000 fine paid by a speeder caught in Oregon for exceeding 100 mph.

Pick of the Day: 1941 Cadillac Series 62 custom-built resto-mod coupe

10

The Pick of the Day is an immaculate-looking 1941 Cadillac Series 62 that’s been masterfully resto-modded, with its original fine-looking styling and trim restored and a modern V8, interior, steering and suspension installed.

It required “10 years of love to create this black beauty,” according to the Lolo, Montana, dealer, advertising the Cadillac on ClassicCars.com. “All metalwork, stainless and chrome is new or refurbished. Body and paint flawless.

“The interior is unbelievable; you have to touch it to realize the quality. Top-shelf Tapis products completely throughout the interior, including the finest Ultrasuede leather seats and door panels in Persian Blue, blue diamond carpet and clear blue headliner.”

The 2-door coupe is powered by 1970 Cadillac running gear, with a 472cid V8 that generates 325 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, and a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, the dealer notes.

“It has power steering and power disk brakes up front, air conditioning, tilt wheel, power windows, power door locks, power seats and power antenna,” the ad says. “Cadillac wire wheels (5) and 4 new 4-inch wide-white radials,”

Whoever opts to buy this gorgeous Cadillac will be getting something of a bargain, the dealer advises, because the owner who consigned the car has lowered its price for quick sale.

Cadillac

“Seller says reduce the price!” the dealer says. “Ran out of storage space for the winter. He wants it gone!”

Considering the Cadillac’s apparently excellent condition and splendid appearance, it does seem reasonably priced at $55,000.  The black coupe would be a spectacular cruiser and a star at car shows.

“The quality of this build is stunning; the cost of replacement would be staggering,” the dealer concludes.

Vin Diesel surprises crowd at Arizona FuelFest

0

Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel made a surprise appearance this past weekend at the inaugural FuelFest event at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park just south of Phoenix. Fellow stars Tyrese Gibson and Cody Walker were scheduled to be present, but Diesel arrived unannounced for a reunion.

The Arizona event was the third FuelFest, an event launched by Gibson and Walker and previously held in Los Angeles and London. The events raise funds for Reach Out WorldWide, a non-profit founded by Walker’s actor/car-collector brother, the late Paul Walker.

FuelFest is billed as an automotive, art and entertainment experience that features live music, food, celebrities and more. The car show at Wild Horse included more than 600 custom and exotic cars and trucks, as well as a drift course and the Barrett-Jackson VIP lounge.

Before going to FuelFest, Craig Jackson took part in The Driven Project, where he was reunited with Jared 10 years after their first ‘supercar therapy’ drive

In addition to its participation at Wild Horse, Barrett-Jackson took part earlier in the day in the Driven Project at the Phoenician resort. The Driven Project provides “supercar therapy” to children fighting life-threatening illnesses.

At the Phoenician, owners of such cars gave rides to 20 VIPs — very important passengers — from the resort to FuelFest. Among those taking part was Barrett-Jackson chairman Craig Jackson and his Bugatti Veyron.

Pick of the Day: Restored 1952 Chevrolet Styleline

6

The post-war Chevrolets may not be as popular as Ford’s “shoebox” design, but the Pick of the Day is a gorgeous example of what Chevy had to offer. The car is a 1952 Chevrolet Styleline DeLuxe sedan that has been restored with a head-turning appearance.

The car is being offered for sale on ClassicCars.com by its private owner in Lakeside, California, and still carries its original 235cid Blue Flame Six engine and Powerglide automatic transmission.

The owner notes that the car was restored by M&J Restorations in Santee, California, and the result of that work “gets thumbs up everywhere I go in it.”

The seller says the car originally was sold in California and has no rust, pointing out, however, that it has had “some work done on the floor and trunk pans.”

Also, it has new brakes and rebuilt master cylinder, a new metal gas tank, rebuilt gauges, new glass and rubber, new upholstery and new tires. It also has a new-old-stock steering wheel, and “every piece of chrome and stainless trim has been rechromed or polished.”

The car’s body is Sunlit Green — a shade the seller saw and liked on a Lexus that pulled up next to the Chevy at a stoplight one day — with a white roof.

The car is being offered for $30,000. To view this listing on ClassicCars.com, see Pick of the Day.
