The Petersen Automotive Museum holds a movie night Saturday that will act as the exclusive L.A. premiere of McLaren, the movie that recounts Bruce McLaren’s life from his from humble beginnings at his father’s auto shop in Auckland, New Zealand, to revolutionizing Formula One racing, becoming the youngest driver to win a Grand Prix until his untimely death at 32 in a racing accident.

Museums: Gearing up for Father’s Day activities

Father’s Day at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles includes the opportunity to take a family photo inside a classic Petersen vehicle, to explore engines with ‘Hoods Up’ on select vehicles, and a visit to the Discovery Center where the little ones can create a trophy for Dad. Drago, the museums’ restaurant, will have a Father’s Day lunch on the Petersen’s rooftop penthouse with a special menu as well.

The Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, will host a Classic Car Meet-up Saturday, June 17 at 9:30 a.m. All makes and models are welcome and car show entrance is included in museum admission.

Three iconic pieces of California custom-car culture take center stage next month on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as the Historic Vehicle Association displays the latest vehicles to be commemorated and recorded in the HVA National Historic Vehicle Register and archived in the U.S. Library of Congress.

The privately owned cars will be shown at separate times during the month in the HVA glass case on the walkway between the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum and the National Gallery of Art for passersby to see and admire. Continue reading

The book is eye-opening on several levels. There’s the obvious one: The amazing photography of amazing cars and their owners, and of what many would consider the shade-tree mechanics — cottonwoods in the case of northern New Mexico — who transform aging Detroit iron into brilliantly painted works of kinetic art that not only move forward and back but up and down, and sometimes dramatically so. The original structure that still contains the Petersen Automotive Museum was designed by Welton Becket Associates, creators of many Los Angeles architectural icons including the art deco classic Pan Pacific Auditorium, the Capital Records building, the LAX theme building, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in the city’s Music Center.
