Monterey isn’t the only place to be in mid-August. There’s the Woodward Dream Cruise in the middle of the country and at the far end of the nation from California, the 39th annual New England Auto Auction takes place at the Owls Head Transportation Museum on the coast of Maine.
The museum will host an auction vehicle preview August 15-19 with the cars and automobilia up for bidding on the 19th and 20th. This is the inaugural year for automobilia at the sale.
The auction docket includes some 200 vehicles, with the block moving this year inside the museum’s main gallery area.
“This is one of the largest and highest quality selections of automobiles that the museum has seen in the 39-year history of the New England Auto Auction,” Toby Stinson, auction and event coordinator for the museum, said in a news release. “The great selection of vehicles combined with the automobilia sale and the improved auction experience is really exciting.”
Last year, the auction posted a record $3 million in sales with an 80 percent sell-through rate. The top seller was a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 GT-E, one of only three produced with a 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air engine and four-speed transmission, which brought $228,800.
The docket this year ranges from an 1875 Abbot-Downing Concord horse-drawn coach and 1905 Rambler Type I touring car to such modern vehicles as a 2002 Hummer H1 and 2013 BMW K1600 GTL motorcycle.
In between are such vehicles as a 1918 Cadillac Model 57 touring car, all sorts of Model T and Model A Fords, 1928 Harley-Davidson JDXL, 1929 Peerless Six-61 roadster, a 1937 MG SA, 1940 Packard 110 Touring, several mid-’50s Ford Thunderbirds, 1964 Dodge Polara, two mid-’60s Porsche 356s, 1966 Honda S600, 1967 Plymouth GTX 426 Hemi, Mustangs, Chevelles and even a 1950 Chris-Craft Riviera classic wooden boat.
