Bonhams sale of 10 Ferraris from the Maranello Rosso museum collection for $66 million certainly was the big auction news generated Thursday on the Monterey Peninsula, but Mecum Auctions and Russo and Steele also opened the bidding at their respective sales.

Hagerty Insurance staffs each of the Monterey auctions and provides a daily statistical summary to the media. (All sales figures include buyer’s fees.)

Overall sales at the three venues Thursday were $69.7 million and were dominated by the auction-record $38.1 million paid at Bonhams for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO coupe. But the GTO wasn’t the only high-dollar Ferrari at Bonhams, where a 1953 250 MM coupe sold for $7.26 million, a 1962 250 GT short-wheelbase Speciale Aerodinamica coupe went for $6.875 million and a 1958 250 S1 cabriolet brought $6.82 million.

All 10 cars offered Thursday at Bonhams were from the an Italian museum. Now that the museum cars have been distributed — several for well less than pre-auction expectations — the rest of the Bonhams sale continues today.

Mecum Auctions and Russo and Steele also opened their Monterey sales Thursday. At Mecum, the top sale was $103,400 paid for a 1955 Vincent Series D Black Shadow motorcycle, which represented that event’s only opening-day $100,000 sale.

Russo and Steele had three six-figure sales Thursday, led by a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger convertible that brought $149,600. A 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL roadster sold for $125,400 and a 2008 Bentley GTC convertible went for $106,700.

The RM and Rick Cole sales also start today with Gooding & Company joining the action over the weekend.
