The Dallas market gets its second collector car auction of the month when Leake Auction Company stages its annual Dallas Fall sale November 18-20 at Market Hall. It was just two weeks ago that Mecum Auctions held its annual event in Dallas.
“We do not feel that it hurts,” said Richard Sevenoaks, president of Leake Auction. “They bring awareness to the industry in a positive way — this helps everyone.
“With car auctions as frequent as they are, there is always the chance that people have spent their money,” he acknowledged. “However, people also walk away thinking, ‘I wish had bid on that car.’ Or, maybe they missed a car and they will be at our sale looking for it.
“Dallas has a large base of car collectors and enthusiasts,” he added. “Dallas has always been a strong market for us, which is why we added the spring auction.”
The Leake sale is held at Dallas Market Hall and should offer around 500 vehicles on its docket. But Leake has yet another offering to attract registered bidders: They are all invited to a private party on the auction eve at Richard Rawlings’ popular Gas Money Garage, which is the site of the Fast N’ Loud television series.
Regarding the Leake Dallas auction docket, most of the featured lots are modern supercars rather than traditional collector vehicles, though there are a 1966 Ford GT40 Mark I, some late ’80s European sports cars, several Chevrolet Bel Airs, and a 1959 Troy Roadster as well as a 1940 Cadillac Series 60 Special sedan, which carries CCCA Full Classic recognition.
The featured vehicles tend along the lines of a 2000 Lotus Exprit, 2005 Ferrari F430 Spider, 2009 Dodge Viper SRT 10, 2012 McLaren MP4-12C, 2014 Audi R8 Statsis Extreme and 2014 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
“The supercars definitely bring in younger bidders, which helps us broaden our buyer base,” Sevenoaks said.
“Our consignments do reflect a shift in the market,” he added. “We are seeing the modern supercars rise in popularity. That being said, we do have many classics consigned.”
The 1959 Troy Roadster is a restored, open-wheeled racing-style hot rod built by Wally Troy and shown at the Detroit Autorama and the Amelia Island concours d’Elegance.
