Mecum Auctions adds another event to its busy schedule with the inaugural Denver sale June 26-27 at the Colorado Convention Center. The auction company promises 700 muscle cars, sports cars, customs and classics will cross the block.
American muscle will be the featured attraction, headlined by a rare 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air IV (Lot S114), one of just nine such automatic coupes produced and one of only two built with a column shifter.
The Trans Am features one of Pontiac’s most-potent engines ever, essentially a marginally detuned racing engine with four-bolt mains, high-compression pistons, round port heads with redesigned combustion chambers and large valves, a radical cam and an aluminum intake manifold. The Ram Air IV was conservatively rated at 345 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
Another headliner muscle car is a true Mopar survivor, an original and unrestored 1969 Dodge Super Bee 440 Six Pack (Lot S119) with just 23,000 original miles. Originally sold in Denver, the butterscotch-colored coupe with a black bumblebee stripe was stored in a garage for more than three decades, according to Muscle Car Enthusiast Magazine, and is “arguably the finest unrestored car of its type in existence.”
A 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible (Lot S89) in Matador Red also presents as a rare survivor, equipped with a fuel-injected 283 cid V8 and Powerglide transmission and showing just 27,080 miles. The Bel Air is in immaculate condition, Mecum says, and ready to show or cruise.
With the Denver sale, Mecum has 22 auctions taking place during 2015, including the Gone Farmin’ auctions of vintage tractors. Following Denver is the Walworth, Wisconsin, auction at Mecum headquarters featuring “road art,” signs and automobilia, happens July 17-19 and the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, auctions of collector cars, motorcycles and tractors run from July 30 through August 2.
