Assembled over a 30-year period, one collector’s 1,200-piece Road Art trove will be offered for sale October 20-22 at Mecum Auctions’ new Badger Street Facility in Walworth, Wisconsin.
“This unbelievable assemblage comprises an array of investment-grade porcelain signs, neon signs, gas pumps and globes, oil cans and other such automobile-related relics,” Mecum Auctions said in announcing the sale.
Mecum added that the sale of his collector’s Road Art (Mecum has trademarked that term) takes the hobby to “a new level entirely, transcending mere collectability.
“The graphics, the colors and the innovative designs of these collectibles exist today as markers in history and tell the story of this country’s growth from the Industrial Revolution forward; these items are American treasures.”
Among the featured items are a Kelly Lotta Miles Tires double-sided porcelain sign with a 42-inch diameter, a Musgo Gasoline double-sided porcelain sign and vibrant Husky Gasoline Motor Oils sign, which are presented “in a condition of such high quality that they take a step beyond the traditional ideas of desirability among collectibles and cross over into uncharted territory,” Mecum proclaimed.
“Together, the Road Art items in this collection create a colorful timeline through the past; as individual items, these artifacts today stand definitively as works of fine art.”
Because of the scope of the collection and the fact that it has been moved into Mecum’s new facility, a series of preview days will stretch over several weekends. The collection can be previewed from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. (Central time) on September 22-24, September 29-October 1, October 6-8 and October 13-15, with the sale taking place October 20-22.
