There’s no basket weaving or canoe races at the Le May museum’s summer camp program. The huge auto museum in Tacoma, Washington, offers a High Speed Fun camp and an Energy Detective camp for youths 8-15 years of age.

The High Speed Fun camp runs July 13-17 and allows campers to practice their skills on the museum’s Speed Zone racing simulators and slot car track. Campers also will have an opportunity to meet local race car drivers and to work in age-based teams to test their knowledge of speed with daily science and design challenges.

The Energy Detectives Camp is July 27-31 and focuses on innovative technology and experiments with various power sources, including solar and wind energy, hydrogen fuel cells, and biofuels. Campers will meet local scientists and engineers, plus complete daily STEM activities in age-based teams with a goal of determining which fuels are best for the future sustainable energy.

The camps are $250 for museum members and $300 for “future members.”Scholarships and military discounts are also available.
