The first car raced by Jackie Stewart will be offered at Silverstone Auctions’ sale July 26-27 at the Silverstone racing circuit in England.
The car is a 1960 Marcos GT Xylon. Silverstone Auctions expects the car to fetch between $60,000 and $85,000.
The Marcos marque was founded in 1959 by British Racing Drivers Club member Jem Marsh (the Mar in Marcos) and engineer Frank Costin (the cos in Marcos).
Costin was an aircraft engineer for de Havilland and his brother was an engineer at Lotus. Frank Costin designed many road and racing cars, including the Vanwall that won the first Grand Prix Constructors’ Championship.
Scottish racing team owner Barry Filer was having his cars prepped by the Stewart family garage and invited a young Jackie to do a test drive at Oulton Park. The test went well enough that Filer bought one of nine Xylons for Stewart to drive. That car, chassis G128, carried Steward to four victories during the 1961 season.
The following year, Stewart turned professional and raced in Jaguars.
The car was acquired by its current owner as part of the sale of the remains of Marcos Sportscars in the 1990s.
“It’s fantastic to be offering this car for auction for the first time in its life,” said Silverstone Auctions founder Nick Whale.
“Jackie Stewart is one of the country’s most legendary racing drivers and therefore it’s apt that we are offering it at the home of British motorsport.”
The car is being offered in “barn find” condition, in need of restoration before venturing into vintage racing venues.
“This is a truly great piece of motor racing history which I can’t wait to see restored and racing again soon,” Whale added.
