Three significant Porsche works race cars, including a spectacular 1960 RS60 four-cam Spyder, have been added to Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach auction in August.
The historic Spyder, raced by the factory team in grueling endurance competition at Le Mans, Sebring, the Nürburgring and the Targa Florio, is the star of a nine-car private collection of European sports and racing cars that will be included in the sale, which is held August 15 and 16 adjacent to the site of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The RS60, chassis number 718-044, is one of four Spyders built for the factory racing team, and are considered the pinnacle of development of the 550 introduced in 1953. This car was driven by such illustrious drivers as Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jo Bonnier, Edgar Barth and Hans Herrmann.
Gooding calls the RS60 “the most significant Porsche Spyder ever offered at public auction,” and estimates its value at $5.5 million to $7 million.
The two other landmark Porsche racers, which are consigned separately from the collection, are a 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS with significant works racing history, valued at $2.25 million to $2.750 million, and a rare late-production 1967 Porsche 906E, valued at $1.6 million to $2 million.
Earlier, Gooding announced the addition of the Porsche 956-003 that won the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans for the Monterey sale.
“With these three recent additions joining the Le Mans-winning 956, this year’s Pebble Beach Auction will feature an unprecedented selection of works racing Porsches,” said David Brynan, Gooding senior specialist. “These cars perfectly illustrate the evolution of Porsche’s factory racing program, from the early four-cam Spyders through the Group C era, and all four possess a noteworthy individual racing history.”
The nine-car collection from a Texas enthusiast includes three other Porsches: a rare Viper Green 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR, an ex-Vasek Polak 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR with matching transporter, and the Dick Barbour Racing 2000 Porsche 996 GT3R that won its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring.
Two other historic racers from the collection are a 2004 Maserati MC12 GT1 run with factory support in the FIA GT and ALMS series, and the Auto Sport Racing Team 1998 Ferrari 333 SP that placed fourth overall at the 1999 24 Hours of Daytona.
