Hopefully it’s treats not tricks for bidders at Auction America’s inaugural Hilton Head Island sale scheduled for Halloween afternoon October 31.
Recent consignments to what is being billed as 100-vehicle “boutique” sale certainly meet the “treat” criteria, including a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC, a Safir-built 1992 Ford GT40 Mk V Spyder, 1965 Maserati Sebring Series II coupe by Vignale, 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera and a Hilton Head best in class 1953 Chevrolet Corvette.
The sale, a first for the annual Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival, closes out Auctions America’s 2015 calendar. Auctions America also will be sponsor of the festival’s “Salute to Centennial Driving” tour taking place the morning of the auction.
Auctions America called the ’67 300 GTC, “a well-sorted example” coming out of four decades of ownership in California, with invoices and receipts dating to 1976. The pre-auction estimated value is $650,000 to $750,000.
The GT40 Mk V is one of two such vehicles built around an aluminum monocoque and was the personal car Peter Thorp, owner of Safir Engineering, which did the continuation series of the Le Mans-winning Fords. Power comes from a 425-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8 with Dart alloy heads. The car has Ford racing team chassis plates and numbers and was built largely with original tooling.
The car carries carbon-fiber bodywork with GT40 Mk II-style rear panels and, at less than 1,900 pounds, is said to be the lightest GT40 built. The pre-auction estimate is $300,000 to $350,000.
Other headlining cars to be offered at the auction include:
- A “highly original” Vignale-bodied 1965 Maserati Sebring Series II coupe, one of only 98 Series II coupes produced, showing 70,000 kilometers on its odometer and coming out of long-term ownership ($200,000 to $240,000).
- A two-owner, 35,000-mile 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera ($225,000 to $275,000).
- A 1953 Chevrolet Corvette that was best in class at Hilton Head Island in 2009 ($225,000 to $275,000).
- A four-owner 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham delivered with “vanity accessories” including stainless-steel drink tumblers, cigarette case, lady’s compact and leather-backed mirror ($175,000 to $200,000).
- A 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz with air conditioning ($120,000 to $140,000).
The auction also includes automobilia headlined by a one-of-a-kind Michele Conti 1:10-scale Ferrari 330 GTC model and an original Alfredo de la Maria Bugatti Type 37 oil painting.
