The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum launches a nine-part series Saturday focused on photographing the automobile. The series, The Foundations of Photography Study Series, features photographers Andrew Taylor and Michael Furman, both well-known for their photography of classic cars.
Each session is to run two hours, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and will be held in the museum’s main hall. Each session will cost $20 for museum members and $25 to non-members. To reserve a spot in a class or the entire series, you can go online to the museum’s website and purchase a ticket.
Here is the complete schedule:
February 21—Photography Theory: Michael Furman speaks on photography and the automobile
This session will feature the museum’s 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza.
March 7— Foundations of Photography 101: Exposure with Andrew Taylor
Taylor will discuss how to expand artistic options with an understanding of shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and all other critical exposure practices. This class will feature the museum’s 1952 Jaguar C-type, 1956 Jaguar D-type and 1966 Ferrari 365P Tre Posti Berlinetta Speciale.
April 18— Foundations of Photography 102: Composition with Andrew Taylor
Taylor will explore how composition can make an interesting subject bland or make an ordinary subject appear beautiful. The course addresses how the camera differs from the eye and introduces composition fundamentals, such as balance and point of view. This class showcases the museum’s 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe and 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
May 30— Foundations of Photography 103: White balance, color temperature and backlighting with Andrew Taylor
Taylor will discuss the importance of geometry, light, and color in composition, and look at how composition can be improved with a variety of post-production techniques. This class features the museum’s 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900A and 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B MM.
June 20— Foundations of Photography 104: Lenses and filters with Andrew Taylor
Taylor will explore the creative options provided by various kinds of lenses and lens accessories, including common and inexpensive lens attachments, from polarizers to neutral density filters. The class showcases the museum’s 1970 Porsche 917LH and 1975 Alfa Romeo 33 Tipo 12.
August 22— Foundations of Photography 105: Flash fundamentals with Andrew Taylor
Taylor looks at concepts and techniques behind effective lighting with flash, using the museum’s 1958 Aston Martin DBR1 and 1956 Maserati 300S.
October 17— Foundations of Photography 106: Capturing speed with Andrew Taylor
Taylor discusses e concepts and techniques behind capturing the sense of motion in photography. This class will use the museum’s 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Coupe and 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.
November 7— Foundations of Photography 107: The automobile Portrait with Michael Furman
Furman will discuss his theories and system of automotive photography while staging a photo-shoot in the museum.
December 5— Photographing the Details with Michael Furman: For museum members and attendees of our foundations of photography study
The final event will be a meet and greet with Dr. Fred Simeone followed by photo shooting time behind the museum display barriers with staff available to open hoods and doors upon request. Photographs submitted by students will be displayed on the museum main screen.
