A late-model Ford GT sports coupe has again scored top dollars at a Mecum auction, this time reigning at the Kansas City sale last weekend.
The 2005 Ford GT also rules as the highest-dollar vehicle ever sold at any Mecum Kansas City auction, hammering at $290,000 (sales results reflect prices before auction fees).
Total sales for the latest event at the Kansas City Convention Center reached $8,253,041 with 382 cars purchased for a near 70-percent sell-through rate.
Recent Mecum auctions have been dominated by 2005-06 Ford GTs gaining highest bids. The top-three sales spots at Mecum’s Chicago auction in October were occupied by Ford GTs, and three of the top four cars at Mecum’s recent Anaheim auction were Ford GTs. Prices have ranged from $250,000 to $475,000, the latter figure for an ultra-low-mileage Heritage Edition.
The GT was a gleaming halo car for Ford when it debuted to wide acclaim for the 2005 model year, emulating the Ferrari-beating GT40 race cars of the 1960s with iconic mid-engine styling and modern performance. Besides the Mecum auction successes, Ford GTs have become regular high sellers at other collector-car auctions nationwide, earning themselves the title of “instant classics.”
Following the trend was the GT in Kansas City, white with blue Le Mans stripes and just 5,631 original miles on its odometer. In second place at KC was a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro hammered at $94,000, followed by a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner convertible sold for $85,000.
Another late model sports car, a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, was next at $82,000, while a vintage Vette, a 1958 roadster, came in fifth at $78,000.
Mecum rounds out 2014 with its inaugural Austin, Texas, auction today and Saturday, with an estimated 600 vehicles available for bidding. For information, see www.mecum.com.
