A longing for the innocence, prosperity, and cars of the 1950s and ‘60s verified the nostalgia that saturated the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in 1986 as thousands of people gathered to hear live music from the bygone era. Recognized as Hot August Nights, the event has grown in the last 30 years, still featuring live music, but thought of as one of the must-be-at-events for classic and custom car and hot-rod enthusiasts.

With mixed feelings, I noted the Hagerty report this week about the relative values of specific collector cars in relation with value trends in the market as a whole. My ambivalence came from the result for the Austin Healey 3000, which finished dead last in the listing, garnering 7 out of 100 points, with 50 being the median for a car that is keeping up with the market trends; anything higher means it’s moving ahead, anything lower means it’s falling behind.

The Healey’s low result shows that the British sports car has crested in value, and has even fallen back slightly for No. 1 quality examples. This for a car that a decade ago was setting records for its soaring popularity at collector car auctions.

Ron Christenson speaks with fervor about classic motorcycles, his stock and trade as president of Mecum MidAmerica Motorcycle Auctions. He’s a lucky man who has parlayed his passion into a fun and lucrative business.

Christenson started MidAmerica motorcycle auctions in 1989, he said, after several years selling collector cars. In no time, it became obvious that the collector motorcycle market was a valuable niche he found more enjoyable than auctioning automobiles. It eventually become his company’s full-time endeavor.

Proclaiming that, “Knowledge is power when it comes to researching your dream vehicle. No one wants to be made a fool when they decide to make a purchase,” McKeel Hagerty, chief executive of the family-owned collector car insurance and valuation-tracking company, unveiled a new tool Wednesday — the Hagerty Vehicle Rating.

The new ratings, to be updated on a bimonthly basis, will rate each vehicle on a 100-point scale. A score of 50 indicates a model is keeping pace with the rest of the market. Higher ratings indicate a car’s value is moving ahead of the market curve while lower ratings indicate the car’s value is trailing the overall marketplace.

For the second year in a row, the Wisconsin State Fair Park in Milwaukee played host to the Car Craft Magazine Summer Nationals on July 15-17, attracting nearly 2,000 registrants in a wildly diverse showing of American automotive ingenuity.

Nothing seemed inappropriate for the event, which welcomed amphibious fire trucks, stunningly-preserved muscle cars, and tubbed and blown pro-street racers. There were no designated groups or areas for individual makes; instead, cars were parked in random combinations throughout the grounds, making for interesting discoveries at every turn.

Ford produced somewhere north of one million Cortina Mk. I models, and among the rarest of that massive lot must be the 1963 1500 GT that’s going up for bids at the Historics at Brooklands auction August 20 near Weybridge, England.

So what makes this particular Cortina so rare? Well, since it rolled off the line at Ford’s Dagenham assembly plant, it has been driven an average of only one mile a day. After 53 years, the car shows only 19,244 miles on its odometer.

Editor’s note: It was in July, 1916, that President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Aid Road Act, establishing a national policy of providing federal aid for highway construction and maintenance. In so doing, a uniform system of roads was established and helped to further usher in the golden age of American motoring. The following article was produced as part of the act’s centennial by the Historic Vehicle Association.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the motorcar was still largely perceived as a novelty item or, at the very least, something designed only for the wealthiest of Americans. Yet, as the century progressed and technological advancements helped make the assembling of automobiles more efficient and thus more cost effective, more and more ordinary citizens suddenly found themselves able to make the leap from horses to horsepower.

During the past decade, Italian sports cars from the 1950s and ’60s have become very expensive. Cars such as the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, which six years ago would struggle to sell for any more than $65,000, are now selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars on a regular basis.

Even more-common and less-expensive Italian sports coupes, such as the Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce, now regularly sell for more than $60,000. It would seem that there are no more Italian sporting coupes left for any kind of an affordable price, but happily there are still a few of these wonderful cars left.

The Pick of the Day, a 1964 Lancia Flaminia coupe located in St. Louis, Missouri, is one of those cars. The Flaminia has gracious bodywork by the great Italian design house Pininfarina, and it is powered by Lancia’s jewel-like 2.5-liter V6 engine with a four-speed manual transaxle, located toward the rear for improved balance.
