The top-of-the-line Chrysler for 1964 was the 300K, one of the heralded letter-series cars. But not everyone needed a 360-horsepower, 413 cid Wedge V8 under the hood of their car, and Chrysler offered non-letter versions with 383 cid V8s, which also was good for more than 300 hp.

The Pick of the Day is one of those non-letter cars, a 1964 Chrysler 300, this one a Sport Hardtop, which means it’s a four-door without a B pillar to clutter up the side view.

Aah, the shores of Lake Como, situated just half an hour away from the fashion capital in the world, the burstling city of Milano. Here, for the past 17 years, BMW throws the most prestigious concours d’elegance held in Europe.

What sets it apart first is the location, one of the leading luxury hotels in the world, The Grand hotel Villa d’Este, where you can only join in on the beauty by invitation. The hotel is nestled by lake with a stunning view across the water and with private docking for your Riva should you choose to arrive by water.

Naturally, this also is where BMW does a world premiere to show off its latest concept vehicle. This year, with the 100th anniversary of the brand, it showcased the redesign of two iconic models — the R5 motorcycle and the 2002 automobile.

BMW doesn’t enter its concepts in the concours class of the concours, but invites other manufacturers and coachbuilders to enter. To me, Aston Martin stole that show with its latest collaboration with Carrozzeria Zagato, a stunning car based on the Vanquish chassis.

But most people come to see the elder cars that fill the hotel’s car park. This year there were room for 54 of them.

You can’t have a concours without elegant pre-war cars, and this year there was even a separate class of Pre-1945 Supercars – The Fast and the Flamboyant. It’s difficult to be more flamboyant than showing up with a supercharged Bugatti T57SC Atalante.

Yet even such a vehicle can can be upstaged, as the car next to it proved: A Lancia Astura with a streamlined Castagna body that was built on order from Mussolini for his son and that went straight into racing, and then appeared in this very same concours in 1935.

Some may have wondered how a Jaguar XK120, Ferrari 275 GTB/4 and some other seemingly more mundane cars qualified for the concours, but they were part of the Cars of the Stars class, vehicles owned and driven by such movie greats at Clark Gable (XK120), Steve McQueen (275 GTB/4) or Clint Eastwood (’Ferrari 365 GT/4), also a Dual Ghia that belonged to Vic Damone and was making its first appearance in any concours.

Italian sports and racing cars and cars of the ‘50s also had their place, including a Fiat 8V Supersonic, an unrestored Maserati 200 SI and probably the most famous coachbuilt Maserati in existence — one of only four A6 GCS/54 Pinin Farina coupes.

And that’s just the main concours on Saturday. On Sunday, the show moves about a kilometer down the road to the nearby park of Villa Erba where the cars are put on public display in a larger venue.

Three major trophies are awarded during the weekend. Saturday, visitors vote on the the Coppa d’Oro, which went to a streamlined Lancia Castagna. Sunday, visitors at the park presented the the Trofeo BMW Group Italia to a Lamborghini Miura P400 SV and at the gala Sunday evening, a panel of esteemed judges selected a 1954 Maserati A6 GCS Pinin Farin coupe as their best of show selection.

Let’s say that you own or are interested in some type of import car that is, say, a bit less popular than the mainstream collector’s items. Think Renault, TVR, Saab, Opel… And you would like to get together with like-minded owners who share your odd obsession. This can be a bit tough outside of a national meet for that particular car, if there even is one.

Well, the solution could be the Carlisle Import and Performance Nationals. This Pennsylvania show does indeed have a swap meet to go with it, but the real focus is on import cars, and the ones that you don’t see every day. If you have always wanted to see an Opel GT, a Renault Frego, or perhaps a TVR, then this is the show for you. Basically, it is the show for you if you love orphan import marques, and they’re all in one place.

There has been quite a lot going on in the collector car auction market since last month’s report for Classiccars.com. RM Sotheby’s held its Monaco sale, Mecum held its sale in Indy, Auctions America held its spring Auburn sale, and Bonhams held its Monaco sale, the first since 2010.

Much like last month, cars are still selling and while we now have more of a buyer’s market than a seller’s market, cars are still being sold and sold for strong money. The sweet spot in the market seems to be with cars under $100,000, which are selling fast and for strong money.

The 1970s was the funkadelic decade when folks did the hustle in bell bottoms and drove around in “personal luxury coupes,” best exemplified by the Pick of the Day, a classic 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

This low-mileage coupe wears the factory-correct Sequoia Green and Antique White colors that were so popular during that strange era, and according to the Tampa, Florida, dealer advertising the Chevy on ClassicCars.com, it is a one-owner Florida car in great original condition.

The idea of a project car can be very alluring: you obtain a blank canvas that can be transformed into the car of your dreams, be it highly modified or bone stock. For some, the glamour is short-lived as funds dry up or attention is lost during the often years-long process of restoration. Others withstand the challenges and complete their project cars exactly as they had envisioned them.

After many months of secrecy, the first Chevrolet Camaro emerged from the General Motors Assembly Plant, located in Norwood, Ohio, on May 21, 1966. This was the pilot car, the Number 1 prototype Camaro of 49 that were built in preparation for mass production of a new kind of sports Chevy.

Camaro would be officially launched in Detroit in August 1966 and a month later, Chevy’s sporty compacts rolled into dealer showrooms to begin their important mission: to chase the runaway success of Ford Mustang, which was more than two years and well over a million cars ahead.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Camaro, the Historic Vehicle Association is documenting this first car, which wears VIN 100001, to enter the National Historic Vehicle Register, making it the next iconic vehicle with American historic significance so honored with permanent inclusion in the Library of Congress.
