With a pair of pre-war French classics each selling for more than $3 million, RM Sotheby’s fourth Ville Erba sale on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como posted more than $28.5 million in sales Saturday. Forty-one of the 66 cars and motorcycles were sold, for a 62 percent sell-through rate.

“It’s great to see that the demand for special pre-war cars is stronger than ever, and we continue to see rare, low-production supercars with excellent provenance, performing very strongly,” Augustin Sabatie-Garat, RM Sotheby’s car specialist and Villa Erba auction manager, said in a news release.

A few days ago, Bob Golfen’s Pick of the Day was a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. The choice for today is a 1962 Sunbeam Alpine.

Tiger. Alpine. What’s the difference?

Basically, the Tiger is the souped-up version of the Sunbeam and is empowered by a small-block Ford engine that none other than Carroll Shelby hisownself figured out how to shoehorn under the “bonnet” of a British sports car designed around a four-cylinder powerplant.

Back in 2005, Alain Cerf opened the doors of the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum to celebrate the engineering, design and innovation that went into some of the pioneering cars of the Twenties and Thirties from Europe and America.

Since that grand opening, the museum has grown, evolved, and acquired more and more exotic European machinery, almost six dozen cars in all, many with badges that most enthusiasts have never heard of. That’s what makes it so completely wonderful.

The four-door luxury convertible is pretty much an extinct configuration, gone by way of 1960s Lincoln Continentals, unless you count a couple of recent concept cars.

But there was a time when an open-air car with rear doors was the height of stylish transportation, such as the Pick of the Day, a 1937 Ford Model 78 Deluxe Convertible Sedan. While the Ford looks original, other than its slightly lowered stance and modern wheel treatment, the convertible packs a modern drivetrain for performance and reliability. The dual exhaust is also something of a giveaway.

There are the sights, smells and sounds of competition cars being utilized to their maximum potential. There is a flurry of fascinating mechanical activity taking place in the paddock. And there is an interesting variety of amazing street cars in the parking lot. It’s one-stop shopping for classic car nirvana.

SVRA’s Spring Vintage Festival races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, traditionally signals the start of the vintage racing season in the upper Midwest. Despite a practice session of unseasonably cold and wet weather, entrant attendance indicated continued enthusiasm for the classic car hobby and amateur racing.

Getting a car accepted to show at a top concours d’elegance such as Pebble Beach or Amelia Island is quite a difficult endeavor to pull off. You need a coachbuilt car to start with, and you need a car from a marque that is well-respected.

Those ingredients add up to a car that can cost quite a bit of money, in the realm of many hundreds of thousands of dollars, which makes the climb to entry for these events quite steep.
