At the 11th annual Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, staged at the famous Boca Raton Resort and Club on Florida’s east coast, there was a lot of money to be made, but it was made for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, almost $10 million so far.

The all-volunteer concours (more than 300 persons this year) was founded by megadealer Rick Case and his wife, Rita, and has grown to become one of the major events of the winter in the Southeast.

When the talk turns to future classics, one of the first Japanese cars that pops into mind is the Honda S2000, a quick and aggressive little roadster with an engine that loves to rev. The S2000 is something of a throwback to the British sports cars of the ’60s, and it has earned a reputation as a raw and demanding hot rod that rewards the driver with its unique style and performance.

The Pick of the Day is a 2005 Honda S2000, a second-generation model that had received a minor facelift and an engine enlarged to 2.2 liters from 2.0. The 2.2-liter engine delivers a peak of 237 horsepower at a lofty 7,800 rpm but only a comparably mild 162 pounds-feet of torque at 6,800 rpm.

The magic of Porsche engineering was at full chat in the early 1950s when the upstart sports car company revealed its remarkable and groundbreaking flat-four engine with four overhead camshafts, two per side.

Designed by Ernst Fuhrman, the complex engines were small in displacement but mighty in high-revving output, and they quickly earned Porsche the reputation of a giant killer on international race tracks at the top of the competition game.

One of my favorite things about the collector car hobby is finding a car that was once very expensive and buying it at the bottom of its depreciation cycle. I have done this quite few times, and in every case, I ended up driving a great car that increased in value over my ownership so that when I sold it, I had essentially owned it for free.

Lately, I have been looking closely at the Bentley Continental R coupe built from 1991 until 2002. Over that period, Bentley built only 1,236 of them, and when new, they cost northward of $300,000.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is a modest-looking compact SUV in a market in which extravagant styling and trim are major selling points. The interior is pretty standard stuff, too. Nothing to get excited about.

But what Tiguan lacks in panache it makes up for in drivability. This is what Volkswagen does well, presenting a car or SUV that feels solid and performs above par. The 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four is lively, the steering is quick and precise, and the handling is surperior for this popular class of little truckette.

Although the Mazda RX-7 has never hit its stride as a collector car, enthusiasts know it as an innovative sports car powered by a tiny-yet-powerful rotary engine mounted far enough behind the front wheels to earn it mid-engine designation. A near-perfect 50-50 weight balance contributes to the car’s exceptional handling.

The Pick of the Day is a 1983 Mazda RX-7 GSL with only 32,699 miles on its odometer and a very modest price tag for such an interesting survivor. The GSL label designates the fully optioned luxury model equipped with the desirable power and convenience features of its day.

The sale generated $34 million in transactions with a 73 percent sell-through rate. And that was just the collector cars that sold on Friday. On Saturday, the auction continued with nearly 450 automotive mascots from the Vincent Saja collection and with an additional sale of art and automobilia.
