Each Labor Day weekend, Auctions America stages a huge collector car sale in conjunction with the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival in northeastern Indiana. This spring, Auctions America is staging its own classic car festival at its Auburn Auction Park.

In addition to the auctioning of some 450 collector cars — around 200 of them at no reserve — the weekend will include a “retro swap” meet, a Saturday morning “Cars & Coffee,” and an automotive midway.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, or so we’ve been told. For certain Volkswagen fanatics, the recently uncovered cache of 25 forlorn VW carcasses and several tons of musty parts in Iowa might seem like a trove of possibilities.

Some of the cars could be salvageable and provide a way to get into a VW restoration project on the cheap. Or the multitude of parts could include some necessary fodder for that VW project already started, or even for supplying a VW restoration business.

The mishmash of VW cars and parts, oddly found packed together on the second floor of a lumberyard building in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be auctioned June 10 and 11 by Hoge Auctioneering, a business that specializes in farm and estate sales.

The conclusion of our conversation with car collector Brian Styles

Classic Car News: What advice do you have for someone who wants to start collecting cars?

Brian Styles: A couple of things, first everything is cyclical. Every market is cyclical. If you are going to get into a hobby, if you are getting into it as a true collector with multiple cars and invest seven or eight figures into a collection, the best advice is to buy what you love and plan on keeping forever.

When you think of Sammy Hagar, you might remember his early days playing in a hard-rock band named Montrose, or else his song “I can’t drive 55” released during his solo career. The “Red Rocker” was also the former front man of Van Halen, and he founded the Cabo Wabo Tequila brand, among other things.

But gearheads might know him best for his automotive passion and enviable car collection.

Bonhams claims a world auction-record price for a British-built motorcycle with a 1938 Brough Superior 750cc BS4 selling for £331,900 ($481,520) at its Stafford Sale earlier this week. The sale was held in conjunction with the annual Stafford International Motorcycle show in England.

Only 10 BS4 (Brough Superior four-cylinder) bikes were built, and three of them no longer survive. The bikes feature an engine and gearbox from an Austin 7 car.

One of the toughest decisions for classic car owners concerns tires. That’s especially true when dealing with sports or performance cars that are driven by enthusiasts.

You might want your car to look as authentic as possible, but original-type reproduction tires might not hold up to your demands in terms of handling, adhesion or wear. And modern tires can look awkward on restored or preserved cars.

If your particular old-car obsession is Porsche, then you may be in luck. Porsche Classic has teamed up with Pirelli to create new tires with modern-day properties that are suitable in appearance and performance for older cars from 1959 through 2005, including 356B and C models, various generations of 911, early Boxsters and front-engine 924s, 944s, 928s and 968s.

A continuation of our conversation with car collector Brian Styles

Classic Car News: What is something you have learned about collecting cars?

Brian Styles: If you are really passionate about collecting cars, neither the acquisition of the car nor the completion of the restoration is the end of the journey, it’s kind of the beginning. From then on you get to be the new caretaker, the new story teller. It’s our job, I feel, to take these cars around the country and show them and share them with people, and share the research, the history, and the stories that go along with them.

There is a lot of discussion in the hobby about future classic cars. Will there be any? What are they? Who will the collectors be, and when will we see their influence?

If you look at today’s collector car market, it is already happening. And a lot of the cars rising in collectability are from Japan, models such as the Nissan GTR and the Acura NSX. These cars are already changing hands in excess of $50,000. But there are Japanese collector cars that can be had for a lot less.

The Pick of the Day, a 1989 Honda CRX for sale in Phoenix, Arizona, can be had for about a tenth that. These sporty little hatchbacks were extremely popular in their day among young drivers, who are older now and perhaps looking to relive the experience. Today’s younger drivers also find a lot to like about the CRX.

If you’ve always wanted the quickest, craziest and most-offbeat collector car in town, here’s a likely candidate: the street version of a roaring factory rally beast built from Renault’s mild-mannered Le Car front-wheel-drive econobox.

The Pick of the Day, a 1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 Maxi, is a factory homologation special produced in limited numbers to permit the French automaker to compete in the competitive Group B international rallies for production cars. These are all-out racing events that run timed segments on back-country dirt and paved roads, and when the R5 Turbo was born 35 years ago, it briefly ruled.

Ford and General Motors have abandoned the genre, so is the minivan still relevant? Chrysler, or FCA as the automaker is now known, certainly thinks so, and it invested some $2 billion in re-inventing the family-friendly van it launched several decades ago and in which a generation or two of Americans grew up.

No longer is there a Plymouth Voyager or even a Chrysler Town & Country, and the Dodge Grand Caravan is on its way out as well. Replacing them all is the new-for-2017 Chrysler Pacifica. The new name, well, actually a somewhat familiar name, is used to underscore the fact that this isn’t your traditional soccer mom’s minivan but a new and even revolutionary vehicle, in some ways perhaps as revolutionary as that first minivan back in the mid-1970s.
