Pick of the Day: ’58 Impala has had pro-touring upgrades

Pick of the Day is updated classic 1958 Chevrolet coupe

-

You probably know resto-mod, but you might not be as familiar with pro-touring.

A resto-mod is a vintage vehicle that has undergone a restoration in which many of its beneath-the-skin components have been modernized while keeping the car’s basic appearance classic. The idea is to have a car that looks vintage but that can be driven both safely (for example, with disc brakes) and in comfort (with air conditioning).

Pro-touring takes the resto-mod a step further, with an emphasis on making improvements that contribute to enhanced dynamic performance.

The Pick of the Day is a 1958 Chevrolet Impala that has undergone a pro-touring process. The car is being advertised on ClassicCars.com by a dealership in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

“For anyone looking for the look and feel of a classic late ’50s car while enjoying the reliability and comfort conveniences of a modern cruiser, here you go,” the dealer reports. “This original ’58 Impala has been massaged into a modern highway cruiser.

“The attention to detail and the quality of parts used is fabulous. This is not just one of those cars that looks good sitting still, it has been built to drive and enjoy. It goes down the road with the ease and comfort of modern car while giving you a sweet muscle car note and the performance to match.

“If your check book could stand it, you would be writing checks for much more than an above-average income to build this one. Now is your opportunity to enjoy the fruits of another’s labor.”

The car is being offered for $55,950.

The car is powered by a fuel-injected 305cid V8 taken from a late ’80s Chevrolet Camaro and is linked to a 700R4 overdrive transmission and a 3.55 rear. The engine exhales through ceramic-coated headers and Magnaflow mufflers.

The car has power front disc brakes and quick-ratio power steering.

The Taupe leather interior features power seats from a 2001 Cadillac Eldorado, with a custom console and red carpet, as well as Vintage air conditioning.

  1. Arrrgh. So much good work and money spent, but a 305ci boat anchor?! When 383ci stroker SBC motors are dirt cheap and everywhere?
And they couldn’t get the exhaust outlets symmetrical?
Put underbumper straights on this, ’59 Caddy taillight cones over the stockers, and lightly stripe the bodylines underneath in red- voila! Cunningham’s ’58 from “American Graffiti”.
    A sweet car, underserved.

  2. I agree! Why do such a beautiful restoration and throw a useless 305 in her??!!
I have a 383 stroker in my 55 Belair and she goes!!! I love 396’s that would also fit nicely!!
Great car but the power brings the price way down!! GOOD LUCK!!!
