The recent and 32nd celebration of the Lime Rock Historic weekend included vintage racing, car shows and the Sunday in the Park Concours.
The VSCCA-sanctioned racing covered a wide variety of sports car-oriented racing groups with such names as “Nippy and Agile” for the road-going production sports & GT cars; “Dawn of Real Performance” for pre-war sports and racing; and “Not Street Legal” for post-war modified production cars.
The Sunday in the Park car show and concours are the result of a local ordinance banning racing at the track on Sundays. Individual car clubs gather their members from all over the region in displays ringing the entire track while the concours display fills both sides of the famous Sam Posey straight.
Race cars and show cars are shown side-by-side in the concours, all judged by invited guest judges from all over the country (including myself).
Winner of this year’s concours was Peter Sachs of Connecticut with his 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato, which originally was owned and raced by Tazio Nuvolari.
Other notable results included the People’s Choice to a 1926 Kissel Speedster owned by Andrew Benenson; “Just as we found it, untouched or minimally massaged” to an Alfa Romeo SZ owned by Larry Garcia and, in case you think Alfa Romeos won a disproportionate number of awards, Dennis Nicotra’s pre-production 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “gullwing” won best in class 13 “Power to spare and Grace to Boot.” Meanwhile, a 1934 MG K3 Magnette from the Revs Institute in Florida easily won its class.
