Ford Mustangs from different generations, and with different generations of owners, took both Best of Show trophies last weekend in the Cars on Campus car show staged at the UTI — Universal Technical Institute — campus in Avondale, Arizona, with sponsorship from ClassicCars.com and CarStreetJournal.

Winning honors among cars produced before 1986 was a 1973 Mustang convertible owned by Dirk Howard, who is considerably older than his car.

Reigning among later model vehicles was a 2015 Ford Mustang GT owned by Brenden Yervel, a millennial-generation car enthusiast.

While Yervel’s car stood out with its aftermarket wide-body kit, Howard restored his car from a rusty Midwestern hulk to seemingly showroom condition — well, he admitted, the 40-something year-old clock no longer ticks, but the rest of the car was stunning.

Not only was Howard’s work obvious, but a computer monitor sitting atop the air cleaner featured a slide show detailing the restoration process and showing how the car now is driven in parades and to various scenic locations, especially along the original Route 66 in northern Arizona.
