Golfers walk the 18th hole at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in twos, threes or foursomes. Sunday, the famous and picturesque fairway that curves along a stretch of Pacific Ocean shoreline was trod by thousands.
But they weren’t golfers — though some of the men were dressed in the sort of outrageously colorful pants once favored by pro golfers. On Sunday, those on the fairway were spectators who came to witness not great golf shots but to see many of the most amazing cars ever assembled in one place.
The 65th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance drew so many people Sunday that, from up near the 18th green, you were hard pressed to see any of the more than 220 cars out on the fairway.
But patience and persistence paid off. Not only could you appreciate everything from Ferraris to Duesenbergs, and from historic Mercedes to elegant Rolls-Royces.
This year there also were Cunninghams and DuPonts and even Popes. Plus, an array of Lincoln Continentals in celebration of that brand’s 75th anniversary and a dazzling set of cars created by Italian coachbuilder Touring.
And forget about the hushed tones of golfing tradition — there even was a class of grumbling lead-sled Mercurys and another for rumbling Shelby GT350 Mustangs.
