A 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona formerly owned by Elton John sold for £551,250 ($728,422) at Silverstone Auctions’ three-day collector car sale held in conjunction with the Silverstone Classic Motor Racing Festival in England.
The $728,422 figure is close to the $700,000 average value for a ’72 Daytona, according to the Hagerty Price Guide; so much for the singer’s provenance.
Overall, the auction produced £5.5 million (more than $7.267 million) in sales with 71 percent of vehicles offered going to new owners. (Prices reported include buyer’s fees.)
Another highlight of the sale was a 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 that drew gasps from the crowd when bidding topped the £100,000 ($132,140) plateau before selling for £114,750 ($151,630).
In another surprise, a 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL that had a pre-sale estimated value of £70,000 to £85,000 ($92,500 to $112,300) drew an opening bid of £95,000 ($125,300) before selling for £137,250 ($181,362).
“It was an incredibly successful weekend, and we’re thrilled with the results,” Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, said in a news release.
