Offered at the 46th Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson auction, this funny car, recognized as “Snake II,” is the original car used in the popular “Snake vs. Mongoose” match racing promotion from 1970 through 1972 featuring International Motorsports Hall of Famer and legendary drag racer Don “The Snake” Prudhomme take on Tom “Mongoose” McEwen.
The car also appeared in the 2013 feature film “Snake & Mongoose.”
Built by “Lil” John Butera, Snake II was inspired by its predecessor, Prudhomme’s first funny car — a yellow Hot Wheels Plymouth ‘Cuda.
In addition to competing in match races against the Mongoose, Snake II also completed on the the American Hot Rod Association tour and won several events and set several records.
Among its records was the national elapsed-time record in the quarter-mile at 6.35 seconds, set during the 1973 National Hot Rod Association U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis with a top speed of 226 miles per hour.
The car has been restored, is perioud-correct, runs, and has an SFI certified chassis number C30255.
