Editor’s note: This is the final in a 10-day series featuring cars to be sold September 24-26 during Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas auction.
The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro went on sale in September 1966 for the 1967 model year and ran through 1969 as Chevy’s answer to the Ford Mustang, and was a new rear-wheel-drive GM F-body platform.
Available options for the 1969 Camaro included 12 different powertrain options.
The 1969 Camaro featured all-new sheet metal with exception of the hood and trunk, which gave the car an overall sportier look. The grille was redesigned, and the new door skins, rear quarter panels and rear valance panel also gave the car a lower and more aggressive look. This styling was only seen on the 1969 model year with just over 90,000 cars produced that year.
This car has a full custom chassis with Corvette 4-wheel independent aluminum suspension, carefully engineered to fit beneath the stock sheet metal and houndstooth interior.
The Camaro is powered by an all-aluminum 496ci big-block Chevy based on a Donovan block and Dart CNC ported heads. Twin 76mm Turbonetics turbochargers are mounted with custom plumbing and custom exhaust.
Custom vents have been added to the front valance to allow airflow into the custom intercooler system and custom aluminum radiator. A one-of-a-kind dual-plenum, sheet-metal aluminum intake manifold sits on top of the engine and is fed by dual throttle bodies and direct-port fuel injection.
Set at a conservative 9 psi, the turbo system allows for 93 octane pump gas, but it can be dialed in for a big power increase on race fuel if so desired. A built Turbo 400 transmission with custom converter and Gear Vendors overdrive reliably harnesses the twin-turbo big block’s power and feeds it to a 3.54 gear DANA 44 Corvette IRS rear. Fourteen-inch Wilwood 6-piston disc brakes slow the car down and fit behind one-off Colorado Custom 18-inch knock-off-style wheels with Nitto tires.
