My Classic Car: Ken’s 1958 Edsel Corsair

It was the Spring of 2000 when I first saw my soulmate. It took a drive to Maryland and upon turning into the owner’s driveway it was love at first sight as I knew I was not leaving without the car.

The car was a 1958 Edsel Corsair, tired and worn and needing some TLC, and I was just the one to give it.

Financing was arranged and she came home to Pennsylvania.

Built on October 4, 1957, the same day Russia launched Sputnik into orbit, this became her new name. For the last 17 years I have put much love and time into bringing her back to her former glory. It’s become a true labor of love as I strive to keep everything as close to factory original as possible.

Sputnik has driven to Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and as far west as Iowa, where she paid a visit to the historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Her visit to Michigan took her back to her birthplace at the Wayne Assembly Plant where she was born, and became admired by former workers of the plant who remembered building the cars there.

In 2017 year she will again head back to Michigan for the 60th Anniversary of the Edsel.

I can honestly say this car has become my soulmate, one which I have truly fallen in love with and desire to spend life enjoying to the fullest. Sputnik will once again visit the Carlisle All Ford Nationals in 2017 to be part of the fun.

One of her former owners saw her on a visit to Carlisle a few years ago and was stunned to see her still going strong since he hadn’t seen her since 1983.

Sputnik was the first Edsel to be featured on Classic Restos, hosted by Fletch, and plans are in the works to return to the Baltimore area to visit to her dealership building where she was sold when new.

She has made so many wonderful new friends through the years. The adventures with Sputnik never seem to end.

  1. If we can’t style them today like those of the past due to “Safety Reasons” could we at least use some of those brilliant colors?
