I was 18 working as a pump jockey. A guy that came into are service station had this car, a 1963 Chevrolet Impala, and I always loved it.

One day, he came in and was driving a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. I asked about the 1963. He said it was for sale. It had a 409 and four-speed and would scream!

I asked my Dad if he would cosign a note to borrow $800 dollars. That was the sale price.

Today, as I write this, I miss this car like it was yesterday. Now, a decent Chevy with a 409 is big bucks.

  1. Coming home from a sales call in Waycross, Georgia about 30 years ago I stopped at a south Waycross junk yard and discovered that the old fellow running it had slab side building next door from which he occasionally sold a few cars and ran as a little museum. Once inside my eyes almost popped out of my head. There in a corner of the old rustic building sat a fire engine red 1962 Chevrolet 409 convertible. Gorgeous in it’s dimly lit splendor. I couldn’t wait to get home and tell my wife and young baby girl how gorgeous it looked and that it was sale for only $ 25,000.00. To this day I still remember my wife saying you’re not going to buy that car, we can’t afford it. That was the end of that and I’m still chagrined when I think about that car that I lived so much that got away!!!!!!
