While it’s often hard to measure success for new collector car auctions, Barrett-Jackson’s first sale in the northeastern United States seems to have rung the bell on any number of levels.

The inaugural Northeast Auction at the Mohegan Sun resort in Connecticut was Barrett-Jackson’s first double sellout in the company’s 45-year history, the auction company reported, with admission tickets sold out shortly after the gates opened Thursday and consignment spots for auction vehicles sold out days before the sale began.

The three-day auction attracted more than 90,000 people, the highest attendance on record for any three-day Barrett-Jackson event, the auction said, and by far the highest for any kind of event held at the Mohegan Sun.  Among the attendees were about 1,700 bidders.

The auction achieved a 96 percent sell-through rate for the mostly no-reserve sale of 552 vehicles for a total of $26 million, including auction fees, Barrett-Jackson reported.   Automobilia sales reached $755,000, a record for a non-Scottsdale auction.

A total of $605,000 was raised for charity, including the sale of the 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-H concept/prototype that garnered $150,000, with all proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Foundation.

“It was incredible to witness the electricity that filled our arena,” Craig Jackson, chairman and chief executive of the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Barrett-Jackson, said in a news release. “Not only did we make history by selling out of tickets within hours of opening day, we also filled our docket far ahead of the auction.

“The overwhelming reception for our Northeast Auction is a testament to the level of respect for Barrett-Jackson in the collector car community.”

The top 10 sales at the Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction were:

  • 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 – $624,800
  • 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 fastback – $346,500

  1. This was my third B-J Auction. It was packed with enthusiasts … shoulder to shoulder. Regretfully, the arena was too small to hold all the crowds. I hope next year they bring more and bigger tents or find a different venue. They did a great job, considering the record crowds.
