A barn-found Bentley R-Type Continental fastback, a Rolls-Royce Phantom V once part of the British queen’s fleet, a historic 1965 Ford Mustang race car and a 1931 Chrysler CD Deluxe Eight roadster with movie credits are the star cars for Barons’ Spring Classic auction April 21 at Sandown Park in Surrey, England.
Built in 1954 for Welsh racer R.D. Weatherall, the Bentley, one of only 218 produced, originally was painted purple, the color worn by Weatherall’s racing cars. The car has bodywork by Mulliner and was repainted white by its second owner, a doctor. The consignor for the auction has owned the car for 23 years, but it has been in storage for 15 years and is being sold in as-found condition as a restoration project. The pre-auction estimated value is $300,000 to $600,000.
The 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V is believed to be the first such B Series Phantom B produced and as such to have been displayed by the company at the 1963 British motor show before joining the Queen Mother’s fleet. The car is equipped with a two-way telephone as well as the usual Phantom options.
The 1965 Mustang has a long vintage racing history in England.
The ’31 Chrysler was built with right-hand drive and is being sold by its second owner, who acquired and restored the car in the 1960s after it had spent 30 years in storage. The car appeared in Steven Spielberg’s movie Empire of the Sun and in a BBC production Speed King about Malcolm Campbell.
“These are some of the most exciting sale entries we have had for many years,” Barons director Tony Cavell said in a news release. “They are all cars which have not come to market for a very long time.”
